If one has to “go down” - you know, get socially shunned, optically cancelled, be maligned, strong armed, ruined or whatever, even killed for their values, it’s a noble thing. Always. Healthy societies don’t force people to make these choices.

The most wild thing I had to come to terms with as an adult (and it was a CPTSD type of loss of innocence) is the amount of people in the world that have literal malicious intent. It’s not my natural state to be like that and I always have to make sure I remember.
