Trying to view your own Ego is like asking someone inside their office building to draw an accurate aerial view of it. You would need to change your position or perspective in order to see an aerial view of it.
Viewing your Ego is similar. When your'e in your own head viewing your Ego its the same. You need to step outside of your Ego (aka Default Mode Network to neuroscientists) in order to accurately know what it is and how to begin dealing with it.

Ayahuasca (and other psychedelics) can introduce you to your 'Ego' by allowing you to briefly 'step out' of its influence for a few hours.
Don't worry you'll have it come back but in its absence you can experience healing and rest from the, perhaps harmful, neural patterns that have developed in this area(s) of the brain.
Think of it like your Ego under under maintenance for a few hours and while it is you get to fix and improve the neural patterns that have been created up there from your life from the years up until that point.
If you are someone who has experienced trauma, depression and addictions then these patterns have probably been embedded in the 'Ego' part of the brain and can be partially or fully relieved by using psychedelics in a healthy and safe ceremonial way.

Is spiritual understanding as "simple" as lowering the volume of certain parts of the psyche (ego)?
The Default Mode Network (DMN), thought to be the seat of the Ego, is reduced in activity when under the influence of psychedelics according to the work of Dr Robin Carhart-Harris.
Through the action of Ayahuasca's DMT on your brain the DMN is reduced in its activity allowing you to experience life with the 'volume of the ego' turned down and grow spiritually and also heal.
What happens in that state is healing of trauma and rewriting of neural networks but also it is thought that your DMN restricts certain spiritual information from being perceived while it is 'on'. Hence, while your DMN is reduced in its activity you have a chance to experience different spiritual information which you don't normally perceive.
