I have become aware of a major problem with Bitcoin today. While I thought that the best quantum computers today don't have more than a handful of qubits yet, the actual number is already around 100 for the IBM quantum computer and it's doubling every year or so. To calculate the private key from a public Bitcoin address requires approximately 4000 qubits. This means the private Bitcoin keys will be hackable with quantum computers before 2030. Quantum computer will also be able to calculate the hash of new blocks in milliseconds.
There is a solution for it though. Bitcoin would need to upgrade its protocol and its address format before this point is reached. It would be some kind of hard fork. In order to keep our Bitcoins safe, we have to pay close attention about the progress of quantum computing and upgrades to new Bitcoin addresses. Those who will not migrate to the new addresses would lose their Bitcoin, because quantum computers would access them and transfer them to their own addresses.
This means our Bitcoins are not indefinitely safe. We have to keep an eye on this issue.
