2016. Not sure exactly, but the US national election seems to have been pivotal. Also 2020 with the craziness that was COVID. It's hard to define exactly those moments that helped to further polarize.

I feel like this is the direction most node operators will go if they are concerned with compliance/regulation. And as many merchants will use LSP's it'll be up to LSP's if they wish to do this sort of thing. Privacy > Compliance
