if you dont run auth on your relay you get overwhelmed by 5 million cloudflare scrapers each with different IP, with auth, you have more control over the req rates on the websocket.

I am sorry to see so many relays now require AUTH for reading. I don't AUTH to read. I want to read anonymously, just like I can read RSS or websites anonymously. Why require AUTH for reading (other than for DMs)?

NOTE: I totally understand requiring AUTH for writing. And if I reply to somebody and their inbox wants me to AUTH to send that reply, I get it. That is a good policy to prevent reply spam.

It feels to me that nostr is splitting, and a bunch of relays that have taken this AUTH-to-read policy are now unavailable.

- failure to load everywhere

- not loading entirely

- missing dm messages

- delayed dm messages

- photos fail to load

- videos glitch and freeze

- no ability to save drafts

- app crash when swapping apps

- failure to refresh

I am convinced that information is the ultimate carrot & stick.

My new antispam thesis is this:

1. Reject events unless we already have a kind 0 (profile event) for the pubkey.

2. Restrict making a kind 0.

By requiring profile events, you force the attacker to create a profile. By restricting the creation of profiles, you slow them down.

Real users should still be able to get in because they won't hit the same limits.

Well the reason why the hard assets are corporate owned is because those entities mastered the most efficient method of infrastructure build, they don’t own it for no reason. The locales had a need, the corporations would compete for contracts based off the lowest cost and highest efficiency. Maintenance DID become an issue, as it always does. In regards to the spectrum licenses and rights, yes, there’s a lot of thought to be had there. Same with air rights (the space above your property). The federal government will usually tilt towards what’s “best” for the masses (or the ultra-wealthy), & it can be a hard fight in the states, where such a huge space is subject to the same federal governance for efficiency and communal-sharing purposes.
