I got to visit an old friend today. As an arborist I first pruned this Oak tree thirty years ago when the trunk was only about 18” diameter at breast height (DBH). It was brought to Canada and planted in October 1901 by King George V and Queen Mary of England and presented as a gift to the family that owned this land on the lakeshore in Gellatly Bay on Okanagan Lake in British Columbia Canada. In the years since I first worked on this tree, a luxury resort has sprung up around it. Fortunately, knowing the tree’s story, the developers retained it and have had it cared for by legit arborists throughout that time. Proper pruning principles, watering and nutrition. There are well healed branch collar cuts visible on the trunk that me and my buddy Brent made on this tree three decades ago. The trunk is now greater than 36” in diameter. The really crazy thing is that the man who most recently procured the pruning services for this tree this summer, 21 years after I met my current wife, is my father in law who is on the strata council at this resort. Little did I know 30 years ago that the next time I stood in this tree’s shade, I would do so while visiting my in-laws. Life is a trip. It is nice to see that some things endure.

Ok I’ve been back home for the first time in 3 years. Seeing some mild genuine interest in Bitcoin from friends and relatives that are finally feeling the pain of inflation. Problem: some can’t even safely secure or remember their important passwords for things like their online banking and emails. Some can’t differentiate between a web based implementation and an installed app. Or even know what an executable is. Or where their downloads folder is. Or how to answer correctly when prompted for an exe to make changes to their system.

It sometimes feels like Bitcoin adoption is really going to hinge on creating an army of uncle Jim’s that fill the gaps in knowledge so the normies don’t just lose half the supply.

Now that’s what I call a seed phrase.

So good to be home for a short visit and come to the spot I’ve been swimming since ‘84. Both kids learned to swim at this spot, and countless days spent down here with the extended family.

Facebook is always listening to your mic too. I’m the only one in our house that refuses to use it and I get stuff on my Amazon Prime feed that I speak about with the girls. It happens at least once a week. It’s creepy. And the worst part is, you can be as fastidious as you want about your own electronic security and if the people around you aren’t and your image or name appears anywhere in their posts, or you’re listed as a spouse it’s working up metadata on you even if you’re not a user of the app. Between Google, Meta and everyone other big tech company including the hardware manufacturers, they can pretty much deduce how many times you’ve used the bathroom in a single day.

I noticed this week that for the first time, when my wife sends me a picture and text on iMessage while I am driving and I click on the message on my vehicle’s display to receive the content without looking at my phon, not only does it read me the text message but it gives me a detailed description of the content. Two days ago when I was on the road, she sent me a pic of her and my daughter and a couple of their fellow volunteer firefighters standing in front of a fire truck and it said “(wife’s name) sent you a picture of 5 people standing in front of a fire truck with a partly cloudy blue sky in the background. So every picture you send now on iMessage is now receiving some level of AI analysis. Including, I’m sure, any racy pics couples share. It’s so much deeper than anyone has been led to believe.

How to spot the Amdromeda galaxy with the naked eye in the northern hemisphere:

1. Find Cassiopeia (some might know this from their childhood as “The Wutang”).

2. The largest point of the “W” will point at the base of a Y shaped constellation. With an outstretched arm the distance to star at the base is about the length of your hand.

3. Identify the Y

4. Look for a hazy ball about 2/3 of the distance from the right tip of the Y to the left tip of the Y. That’s it Andromeda.

5. Allow your mind to be blown when you realize you’re looking at over 300 billion stars in one spot, whose light left their point of origin 2.5 million years ago, to reach your retina on this beautiful night.
