How to Bring Designers into FOSS: Christoph Ono & Eriol Fox
https://25.foss-backstage.de/session/open-design-guide/
Introducing the Open Design Guide, where designers learn how to find their way into open-source. Christoph Ono (Bitcoin.Design) and Eriol Fox (Open Source Design) present the OpenDesign.guide at FOSS Backstage 2025, trying to respond to the question:
# If designers ask you how to get started in ope-source, what do you tell them?
> Designers often have a hard time seeing open-source as a place they might be comfortable in. So we are building a 12-chapter guide to make these journeys easier. It starts with a basic introduction to open-source, the role of design, how to get started, up to more advanced topics. The ambition is that the guide can be used for solo learning, group learning, and educational environments. It's a 100% open-source project, fully built in public. We are hoping to present it to you in this presentation, open up the space for conversation and feedback, and welcome contributions.

FOSS Backstage 25 - Bridging the Gap Between Designers & Open Source Communities
https://25.foss-backstage.de/session/bridging-the-gap-between-designers-open-source-communities/
I've been sharing this earlier https://stacker.news/items/701524/r/Design_r now looks all the sessions have been uploaded. One of the most interesting below (for me):
ABSTRACT
> Why don’t more designers contribute to open source? We’ll share insights from our research, presenting key obstacles like intimidating contribution platforms and unclear documentation, along with actionable solutions to improve collaboration between designers and developers.

I’m obsessed!: Why following fixations makes our creative work better
As creatives, when something grabs our attention, it has the potential to really take hold. Our obsessions might temporarily tilt us off balance between work and life, but they can take us to unexpected places creatively. So how do we know if we should follow them?

> “Is there a link between being creative and having a tendency to go all in?”
`— Ellis Tree`

> “Sometimes the research stage just explodes into this impossible feat, and you realise that what you’ve set out to do could be an entire PhD.”
`— Thomas Thwaites`

> “Creativity thrives when it’s fed by joy, curiosity, and the things that make us feel alive.”
`— Juanjo Cristiani`

> “Finding creative inspiration feels like the landscape of a flea market: a beautiful mess; unorganised, unstructured places that aren’t dictated by any algorithms.”
`— Jurjen Versteeg`

Gorton: The hardest working font in Manhattan by Marcin Wichary
https://aresluna.org/the-hardest-working-font-in-manhattan/
# The first font in a 1952’s company catalogue was called Gorton Normal.

> Every stroke of Gorton is exactly the same thickness (typographers would call such fonts “monoline”). Every one of its endings is exactly the same rounded point. The italic is merely an oblique, slanted without any extra consideration, and while the condensed version has some changes compared to the regular width, those changes feel almost perfunctory.
Monoline fonts are not respected highly, because every type designer will tell you: This is not how you design a font.

Video from the [INHERITANCE MACHINE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j27RKTHMLkA) recovering an old [Gordon's Machine](http://gorton-machine.org/) used for the engravings.
The font has been used widely across the US and worldwide in the 70s. The example below from an old [American engineering schematics](https://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/82370/font-from-old-70s-american-engineering-schematics)

Today, a redesigned version is available for download from https://webonastick.com/fonts/routed-gothic/ together with a selection of modern font implementations and other typographies with similar design.
