Georg Jensen Reissues Henning Koppel's Mid-Century Pitchers
https://hypebeast.com/2025/9/gerog-jensen-koppel-pitcher-collection-release-date-information

**Copenhagen-based design purveyor Georg Jensen is reintroducing two mid-century pitchers designed by Danish sculptor and designer Henning Koppel.**
Originally crafted in 1962 and 1975, respectively, the reproduction of Koppel's Pitcher 02 and Pitcher 03 are made in mirror-polished stainless steel for the first time in the new release. To achieve the fluid, sculptural silhouette, the updated editions require a process that involves hours of hand-finishing and polishing. Juxtaposed with the industrial strength of steel, the final result's organic, liquid-like quality echoes the Space Age/Mid-Century sensibilities of the original period. While the pitchers are indeed from the archives, the designs maintain their strong futurian feel, even today.
Tips For Finding Inspiration In The Unlikeliest Places
https://duncanwardle.com/tips-for-finding-inspiration-in-the-unlikeliest-places

A colleague at an automotive company once told me that when they needed a better fuel injection system, the engineers didn’t study cars. They studied cappuccino machines. That’s not a typo.
The precision and pressure control of high-end espresso makers sparked the idea that helped them revolutionize performance driving. And that’s the magic of what I call the “Where Else?” method—a tool I developed at Disney to spark innovation from the least expected sources.
Because breakthrough ideas rarely come from staring harder at your own process—they come from walking into someone else’s. Whether it’s a café, a hospital or a shark tank, inspiration is hiding in places many teams never think to look.

If I hear "design pattern" one more time, I'll go mad
https://purplesyringa.moe/blog/if-i-hear-design-pattern-one-more-time-ill-go-mad/

Patterns have certainly mattered historically. Closures, interfaces, and first-class functions haven’t always existed in mainstream languages. Many patterns were non-obvious back then, and so it’s not a surprise that they emerged. But even Java itself, the language so terrible at fostering good architecture, it has become a joke, has had all of those feature for at least 10 years. So can we abolish “command” and “strategy” now, pretty please?
It’s certainly useful to know about the commonly utilized patterns, but experience with real code and a little agility will quickly get you up to speed regardless of how much time you’ve invested in studying patterns in theory, as long as you know the basic concepts. They’re good as a temporary mnemonic for newbies, not as must-know terminology.
This robot lawnmower is designed to pick fruit and throw your dog a ball
https://www.theverge.com/news/772045/nexlawn-master-x-series-concept-robot-lawnmower

Plenty of autonomous lawnmowers have been showcased or introduced at this year’s IFA event in Berlin, but only one of them comes equipped with a robotic arm. NexLawn, a sub-brand of MOVA that sits under its Dreame parent company, has announced the Master X Series Concept, which it describes as “the first robotic mower with a fully functional mechanical arm.”
That arm is designed to help reduce the amount of manual maintenance that’s required for people who own and run robot lawnmowers, such as picking up any fallen sticks or debris that could damage the bot or force it to navigate around the obstacle. The arm folds down to 44.5 cm (about 17.5 inches) in length, extends up to 77 cm (a little over 30 inches), and can reach as far as one meter away when performing outdoor tasks. NexLawn says it features multiple interchangeable arm attachments, including a multi-gripper, a trimmer head, and an edging disc head, with more in development.

ARCHIVE: The Iconoclastic Rise of Charles Haertling
https://www.dwell.com/article/from-the-archive-the-iconoclastic-rise-of-charles-haertling-72755767

Joel Haertling, son and de facto archivist of the late architect Charles A. Haertling, faxed over a single page written by his father. Titled "Thoughts on Architecture," it’s a blurry, typewritten list. Charles Haertling succumbed to a brain tumor in 1984, but the text is immediate and cuts across the years: 21 enumerated glimpses into a creative mind. Someone has circled point number 14: "Design is always a tortuous, grueling, almost maddening, though heavenly sweet, task." The line is as familiar as it is revealing. Look at Haertling’s houses with their radically pitched roofs, daring cantilevers, and mushrooming facades—products of a career spent building in the Boulder, Colorado, area—and you can see both his pleasure and his pain.

American advertisements of the 1930s – in pictures

It was a decade that saw the end of prohibition but also the start of the Great Depression and the looming threat of war, an unusual period for commerce, summed up in Taschen’s latest look at American ads from a certain era. In All-American Ads of the 30s, colorful advertisements for everything from alcohol to cereal showcase new developments in design and a persistent optimism despite economic concerns. The book will be released in September.

Unthinkables: A Bold Branding and Packaging Design
https://www.bbhsingapore.com/unthinkables

Singapore famously banned the sale and import of chewing gum in 1992 to prevent vandals from sticking it on public property like train doors and elevator buttons. Breaking this law can result in a hefty fine. So, how did BBH Singapore get around this? They created a product that looks, tastes, and chews like gum but is made without a gum base. This technicality makes it legally permissible, allowing them to give Singaporeans the full gum-chewing experience without the risk of a fine.

The genius of this project lies in its branding and packaging design. The bright, eye-catching color palette of pink, purple, and blue immediately grabs your attention. The playful and rebellious tone is perfectly captured in the graphics, which feature doodles of stars, hearts, and arrows. The packaging boldly states, "FROM THE LAND THAT BANNED CHEWING GUM," making its statement loud and clear. The design cleverly leverages the very thing it's sidestepping—the ban—as its primary marketing hook.

Birthday Headlines - Discover News and Notable Events from Your Birth Date
Wondering if anything interesting on the news was going on when you were born?

The purpose of this website is to show people what was going on when they were born. The data used in this project is provided by the New York Times API. They have by far the best API I was able to find, with articles dating back to the 1950s. There weren't any other major newspapers that had an API with close to as much data. The closest was the Guardian API, but theirs only went back to the 1990s. I decided to only use articles from the New York Times because their API was by far the best. This tool works if you have a birthday after the 1950s or so.
Words Are Permanent

CyberSmile Foundation teamed up with creative agency adam&eveDDB to launch "Words Are Permanent," an online safety initiative which utilized AI to drive home the realities of cyberbullying and abuse online. The initiative was featured across a number of out-of-home locations, national print, online publishers, and social media platforms.
The campaign took real-life abusive comments targeting young internet users and turned them into tattoos on the faces of children, generated using AI. The overarching message of the initiative was that comments on the internet and social media only take a moment to create but can last a lifetime for those being targeted.
The realistic AI visuals were created by Untold Studios and featured a number of calls-to-action, reminding people that their words have the potential to last a lifetime. Internet users were encouraged to consider their words online and directed to Cybersmile support services.
Pebble Time 2* Design Reveal

First off, for those who didn’t catch the news from a few weeks ago - we’ve been able to recover the Pebble trademark! Our new watches will change from being called Core 2 Duo → Pebble 2 Duo, and Core Time 2 → Pebble Time 2.
The big news today is that we’re revealing the final design for Pebble Time 2. The design that we showed off back in March were preliminary designs. We've been able to tweak and improve the industrial design quite a bit since then. I think it’s turned out fantastically well! I even have a working albeit early engineering sample on my wrist.

It’s incredible how many bad user experiences are still out there in 2025

You’d think we’ve had 30+ years to learn and nail digital user experiences, right? You’d think that by now, flawless experiences would be the rule and not the exception. Right? Right? Disgracefully, far from it, as three recent experiences — that almost had me throwing my laptop out the window — showed me. It’s 2025 and absolutely basic usability and UX failures are still everywhere. Why are we in this mess? I have three hypotheses: 1) Companies chronically underinvest in UX; 2) too many “UX professionals” lack genuine expertise; and 3) even the talented UX folks have little structural power. The good news: seasoned UX professionals now have the best opportunity yet to found businesses that truly differentiate on UX— while others stubbornly leave this trillion-dollar opportunity on the table. If many established businesses won’t make UX matter, it’s time to build new ones that do.

Project Hyperion | interstellar ship design competition
https://www.projecthyperion.org
Project Hyperion is a design-focused competition aiming to advance the feasibility of crewed interstellar missions using near-future technologies. Launched in 2024, the competition sought fully integrated concepts for generation-ship habitats—structures, subsystems, and sociocultural systems meant to sustain life for multiple centuries.

# Design for Centuries
Project Hyperion explores the feasibility of crewed interstellar travel via generation ships, using current and near-future technologies. A generation ship is a hypothetical spacecraft designed for long-duration interstellar travel, where the journey may take centuries to complete. The idea behind a generation ship is that the initial crew would live, reproduce, and die on the ship, with their descendants continuing the journey until reaching the destination. These ships are often envisioned as self-sustaining ecosystems, featuring agriculture, habitation, and other necessary life-support systems to ensure survival across multiple generations.
The Initiative for Interstellar Studies (i4is) is delighted to reveal the winners of the Project Hyperion Design Competition, a landmark global challenge that called upon interdisciplinary teams to envision a generation ship—a crewed interstellar spacecraft designed for a 250-year journey to a habitable planet. The teams designed habitats of such a spacecraft that would allow a society to sustain itself and flourish in a highly resource-constrained environment.
The Project Hyperion Design Competition required architectural designers, engineers, and social scientists to collaborate and address critical mission aspects that enable a spacecraft to function as a closed society over centuries. The collaboration between different disciplines is key to finding holistic solutions that do justice to the complexity of the requirements, in order to provide:
- Habitability for 1,000 ± 500 people over centuries
- Artificial gravity via rotation
- A society that ensures good living conditions, including essential provisions such as shelter, clothing, and other basic needs.
- Robust life support systems for food, water, waste, and the atmosphere
- Knowledge transfer mechanisms to retain culture and technologies
The Priority Compass: Focus your energy on what really matters to you
https://labs.davidbauer.ch/priority-compass/
A simple tool for individuals, teams and organisations to focus your energy on what really matters to you.

## Here's how it works
You can use this tool for your personal or professional life. You can apply it to yourself only or look at how teams or entire organisations spend their time. It’s designed to be very simple, intuitive and more human-centric than just comparing input cost with output value.
The idea is to think about your activities along two dimensions: How valuable are they for what you want to achieve? And how much do you enjoy spending time on them?
Made by David Bauer, a curious generalist who loves making things.
