When Medium was launched in August 2012, I thought online publishing had reached its pinnacle. The beautiful Zen-ish editor felt like a desktop experience—there was no clutter, and it worked. Why ?

There was no way to collaborate with contributors, much less pay them through the platform. And then how much and who should pay? The missing piece was value for value.
