So the only place they could live were the cities (burgs => bourgeoisie). Christians were prohibited from lending money with interest. I don't view money lending as evil. I wouldn't lend money without interest to people who I don't know. I don't think it was rational of the Church to label all money lending as usury and ban it. Christian merchants went to a lot of trouble to mask interest payments, but the Jews were free to do it in the open.
