Honoring memory, provenance and safeguarding design history and building relationships from structural blindness since 1999. Evidence-based, covenantal work in exile. Resisting distortion. TIME Invention of the Year

Every family is defined by its own set of dysfunctions and those were the ones that made our family exceptional.

Great design teams are defined by who’s excluded from that process, not how included everybody needs to be.

One way you knew you were someone Steve considered family was how well you defended an executive’s right to fly off the handle when it came time to ship product and you refused to ship crap.

In order to get invited early to test new platforms, you have to be inventing new platforms:

Here is a 1953 newspaper article by someone else who understood Human Futures Planning predicting what the future telephone might be like.

“In its final development the telephone will be carried about the individual. perhaps as we carry a watch today. It probably will require no dial or equivalent, and I think the users will be able to see each other, if they want as they talk. “Who knows but what it may actually translate from one language to another”

The first principle for anyone audacious enough to want to work with me: 'stay teachable', embrace your audacity, be unassuming and murder your mediocrity.

Embrace silence, don't run from it.

It's there that you will learn how to eliminate distraction so you can focus on the design problem that your team is counting on you to understand better than them.

Designers only talk about the importance of “designing for digital natives” who don’t know how to “design for everybody”.

Apple is getting lazy, we used to fire people for referring to the cherished MacBook as a ‘laptop’.

So off brand for the company to use the term AI also.

Apple’s job is to take existing AI, make it idiot proof and then rebrand it as ‘design’ (instead of AI) without telling anyone.

Also, the most household brand in the world doesn’t need to refer to itself as ‘consumer’.

Someone hired the wrong marketing firm.

You’ll notice that there is always a rush to get Apple to lower its design standards by those who have none in the name of futurism and modernity.

One of the other things I started was the design pattern for the ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ star review and rating system that you see all over the Internet in various products.

Next time you give your @Uber driver or @Airbnb host a 5 star review, or looking at yelp to help you find a restaurant, be sure to think of me. We were the first to do it with the iTunes Music Store.

As soon as work starts to feel like work, there's probably something you could be doing better to reduce painpoints for the people who work with you and improve your own enjoyment in the process.

Mediocrity stores contempt for new processes that require both an attitude adjustment and a new worldview.

Excellence looks for the lesson and improves the game with a beginners mind.

Steve Jobs used to pen letters to himself because he was so excited about the fact that writing technology had come so far with the things we were building and as a reminder to himself that we really aren’t that advanced as a species.

This was a letter he penned to himself only a year before his death:

If you didn't have enough security clearances to be told you aren't permitted to take notes, you weren't actually on the Apple design team.

Bob,

I'll take 'JOBS WITH TOO MANY SECURITY CLEARANCES TO ALLOW NOTETAKING' for $800
