Crypto is compelling for regulation because it is ultimately a communist weapon against freedom money (bitcoin).
Because communism relies on force and control which is in large part why central banking is a critical pillar of communism.
So obstructing information, learning and discovery is critical for authoritarians. And bitcoin as a neutral protocol has no marketing team.
Crypto essentially is all a marketing scheme/ scam and has unlimited marketing funds. The more "shiny" bullshit people are confused by, the less awareness, the less understanding of what bitcoin is. Hence all the state sponsored corruption, and perpetuated confusion around bitcoin and crypto.
In short it all delays bitcoin adoption and causes short term pain for those who don't study money, bitcoin and crypto critically and thoroughly. The goal for corrupt governments (all governments) as always, is to keep the charade going until they can figure out how to stop or control the change, in this case bitcoin.

While I agree it conveniently fits with a possible desire for a cashless society, and cash offers important properties for a free society (bitcoin of course offers these properties including the ability to be cash)
Cash can introduce accounting errors, theft and fraud risk to businesses.
Let's say you work at a state park, an arena concert or event, people using cash is an easy way for workers to game the system, it's hard to track or account for.
At the end of the night everybody has to stay after and count cash and deal with the accounting office, if cash is missing (on purpose or mistake) the person missing the cash is held responsible which can suck, especially for people living paycheck to paycheck. Keep in mind there are lots of low level, not always the most experiences, highest credentialed or people with proven character involved.
The monetary properties cash offers are important. Digital advancements, technology in general is beneficial if it's not captured and controlled.
