Notes are transmitted to different relays. Anyone can setup a relay. You can choose which relays to host content and even add more. It’s actually kinda a simple, lightweight idea. It goes in chronological order like instagram used to. It uses public key cryptography so you just have to trust the public key (no passwords). Each client verifies the public key and signature. There are some interesting concepts that go with it. The NIPs do the most explaining. It’s just a json message which is a format that is easy to read and process. Because it is decentralized it doesn’t require a single entity to host. There is more to it and you can read more about it. Cryptography can be powerful.
