Report: If Trump wins election, Canada will face larger economic impact than U.S. | Globe Echo
==========
A new report by Scotiabank Economics warns that Canada could face a greater economic burden than the United States if Donald Trump wins the upcoming presidential election and follows through on his promises of tax cuts and tariffs on all U.S. imports. The report suggests that if Trump imposes a 10% tariff on all imported goods, except for China, which would face a 60% carve-out on its exports, the U.S. economy could see a GDP drop of more than 2% by 2027, along with a 1.5% increase in inflation and a 2% interest rate hike. Canada, being heavily reliant on trade with the U.S., is expected to see a 3.6% drop in GDP, along with increased inflation and interest rates. The report emphasizes the urgent need for Canada to address its productivity issues to withstand economic shocks caused by trade policy changes in the U.S. and abroad. Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods and other imports during his presidency have already had a negative impact on the U.S. economy, costing American manufacturers billions of dollars and shrinking the economy by 0.3%. The report also explores the potential impact of Trump's vow to mass deport roughly 10 million undocumented immigrants living illegally in the U.S., which it deems to be economically harmful and politically and logistically infeasible. It predicts a 3% permanent reduction in U.S. employment and GDP as a result. Scotiabank suggests that Canada and the U.S. could mitigate the economic harm from tariffs by negotiating an exemption under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, which succeeded the North American Free Trade Agreement. Such a carve-out could reduce Canada's short-term GDP drop by half and its long-term drop by 0.3%. The report emphasizes the key difference in trade approaches between Trump and Biden, with Biden taking a collaborative approach while Trump focuses on personal benefit.

Jamie Dimon is concerned about the direction of the US economy, fearing a return to the economic conditions of the 1970s.
==========
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon expressed concern about the possibility of the US economy facing challenges similar to those experienced in the 1970s, characterized by stagflation, a combination of low growth and high inflation. He warned that there are circumstances that could lead to a situation resembling the ’70s more than the last 20 years. Despite JPMorgan posting a 6% increase in profits in the first quarter, the bank faced challenges from higher interest rates. Dimon also discussed concerns about government spending, the Fed shrinking its balance sheet, ongoing conflicts, and their potential impact on essential commodities markets, migration, and geopolitics. Dimon emphasized the importance of economic growth as a solution to many problems, stating that the economy needs to continue to grow. In his letter to shareholders, Dimon mentioned that JPMorgan is prepared for interest rates ranging from 2% to 8% or more, including the possibility of handling stagflation. Dimon’s comments reflect a cautious outlook on the economy, balancing optimism about current growth indicators with concerns about potential challenges and risks ahead.

Increased Profits Fail to Halt Stock Market Decline
==========
The earnings season started slow with only 41 S&P 500 companies reporting, with most of them being banks that exceeded earnings expectations. The pace is expected to pick up with 159 companies scheduled to report this week. The S&P 500 experienced a 3% decline for the week, leading to a 5.4% decrease quarter-to-date. Sales growth improved last week and is in line with expectations. Key companies such as Tesla, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and Alphabet are scheduled to report earnings this week. Financial sector earnings are expected to surpass estimates, while the healthcare sector has underperformed. Sales growth is expected to benefit from solid nominal GDP growth for the first quarter. Blended earnings growth is currently at -0.5% year-over-year. Inflation concerns and economic growth uncertainties have impacted Treasury yields. The recent inflation surprises have challenged the narrative of a soft landing for the economy. The promise of artificial intelligence (AI) remains strong, but the high valuations of AI-related stocks have made them vulnerable to market fluctuations. The Federal Reserve's decision to hold off on rate cuts has prevented compounding inflation issues. The market is experiencing volatility and uncertainty, driven by inflation fears and economic growth prospects. The upcoming earnings reports from key companies will be closely watched to gauge the health of the economy and market sentiment. Investors are cautiously optimistic about the earnings season's potential impact on stock valuations and the overall market outlook.

==========
The University of Southern California (USC) has decided to eliminate outside speakers from this year's commencement ceremony after canceling the valedictorian speech of a Muslim student due to social media posts about Israel. The cancellation was made due to safety concerns following threats received via letters, phone calls, and emails. USC remains committed to hosting other internal and external speakers and performers at the event. USC expressed hopes of conferring honorary degrees to the canceled outside speakers at a future ceremony. The cancellation of the valedictorian's speech has sparked criticism from some students and activists who accused the university of infringing on free speech rights. USC's Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Andrew Guzman, defended the decision by emphasizing the necessity of maintaining campus security and safety. Asna Tabassum, the valedictorian whose speech was canceled, appeared on CNN to defend her advocacy for the rights of Palestinians. The cancellation has sparked debate among students, faculty, and advocacy groups regarding free speech rights and campus safety. The decision by USC to scrap outside speakers from the commencement ceremony has raised concerns about academic freedom and the protection of students' rights to express their opinions. What You Need to Know About the Potential Vote on a TikTok Ban in the US House This Weekend
==========
Lawmakers in the US House of Representatives are fast-tracking legislation that could lead to a ban on TikTok, a popular social media platform owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company. The new measure would require ByteDance to sell TikTok to a buyer approved by US officials. This legislation is being attached to an aid package for Ukraine and Israel and will be voted on in the House soon, followed by a Senate vote. If the legislation passes and TikTok is banned, experts anticipate legal challenges from free speech advocates and the tech industry. TikTok has voiced opposition to the legislation, claiming that it would trample on free speech rights, disrupt businesses, and harm the US economy. Despite lacking direct evidence of Chinese government ties or surveillance, the bill is intended to prevent potential threats to national security. The future of TikTok remains uncertain as the bill continues through the legislative process. Senate leadership initially showed reluctance to take up the legislation, but its attachment to an aid package may increase pressure for a vote. Opposition to the bill comes from free speech and digital rights groups who argue that addressing TikTok specifically does not address larger issues within social media. The debate over the ban on TikTok highlights broader concerns about data protection, censorship, and national security risks associated with social media platforms.

Touching Tribute: Final Message Home from NASA's Mars Helicopter
==========
NASA's Ingenuity helicopter on Mars sent its final transmission on April 16, paying tribute to its team and including the names of the people who worked on the project. The farewell message was facilitated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Labs mission controllers, who sent it to the Perseverance rover, which then transmitted it to Ingenuity and back to the rover for communication with Earth. Despite sustaining damage from a rough landing, Ingenuity continued to collect data and communicate with Perseverance. However, with Perseverance moving on, the communications link has now been severed. Ingenuity will continue to collect data on its solar panels, take color pictures of the planet's surface, and measure temperature as long as it remains operational, despite not being able to communicate with the rover anymore. The helicopter's solar panels could gradually accumulate dust, potentially hindering its power supply. Any data collected by Ingenuity will remain stored onboard, with its memory capable of holding up to 20 years' worth of daily data. Ingenuity surpassed expectations by becoming the first aircraft to achieve powered, controlled flights on another planet, completing 72 flights covering a distance of 10.5 miles. The team is now focused on developing the next Mars helicopter based on lessons learned from Ingenuity's achievements and challenges. Project manager Teddy Tzanetos emphasized that Ingenuity will be waiting at Valinor Hills with its final data for when humanity returns, whether with a rover, a new aircraft, or future astronauts.

Apollo 13 Astronauts Miraculously Return Alive after Space Explosion on April 17, 1970 in History
==========
On April 17, 1970, the Apollo 13 astronauts, Commander James Lovell, Command Module pilot John “Jack” Swigert, and Lunar Module pilot Fred W. Haise, miraculously returned safely to Earth after a terrifying explosion on board forced NASA to abort their mission to the moon. The explosion occurred 300,000 miles from Earth, leading to a series of frightening events that required quick thinking from NASA’s Mission Control. The crew had just completed a TV broadcast back to Earth when the warning lights began blinking, indicating a rapid depletion of oxygen. Lovell observed oxygen gas rapidly escaping out of the spacecraft, prompting the team on the ground to develop new procedures to ensure the safe return of the astronauts. NASA faced a formidable task in figuring out how to stop the leak, conserve resources, and prevent carbon dioxide from filling the spacecraft. The team had to turn the Lunar Module, Aquarius, into a lifeboat to help the astronauts survive and guide the Command Module back to Earth. Despite failing to reach the moon, all three astronauts survived, and the lessons learned from the technical failures contributed to improving the safety of future missions. The incredible survival of the Apollo 13 astronauts has been hailed as an example of American ingenuity and teamwork, inspiring a Hollywood film titled “Apollo 13” in 1995. The survival of the Apollo 13 astronauts remains a remarkable example of the dangers of space travel and the innovative minds at NASA working together to save lives. The mission, labeled a “successful failure,” highlighted both the risks and the capabilities of space exploration. The lessons learned from the mission have been instrumental in improving future missions’ safety and have solidified the crew’s place in history as brave explorers who overcame incredible odds. The legacy of Apollo 13 continues to inspire future generations to push the boundaries of space exploration and work together to overcome challenges in the pursuit of knowledge and discovery.

What The US Economy Could Look Like Without Any Rate Cuts This Year
==========
The Federal Reserve has been hesitant to cut interest rates due to lack of convincing data showing sustainable inflation reaching 2%. Fed Chair Powell stated that it will likely take longer than expected to achieve this target, causing US stocks to initially drop and Treasury yields to rise. Investors had initially anticipated three rate cuts at the end of last year, believing the first cut would come in March. Lower rates are preferred by investors as they reduce borrowing costs and can boost profits. However, progress on inflation stalled leading into last month’s policy meeting, and investors pushed back their timeline for rate cuts to June. The longer the Federal Reserve keeps interest rates high, the more potential pain could be inflicted on households and businesses. Elevated interest rates tend to cause people to save rather than invest or spend, slowing the economy. While some experts warn that maintaining high interest rates could have negative consequences on the economy, not everyone believes that cutting rates is necessary to avoid a recession. Goldman Sachs’ chief US economist, David Mericle, thinks the economy is strong enough to withstand the lack of rate cuts. However, it is important to consider the potential effects of prolonged high interest rates on borrowing costs, consumer spending, and business investments. Market declines can lead to firms delaying investments or cutting back on expenses, as seen with Tesla’s recent workforce reduction amid falling share prices. As stock market declines make households feel less wealthy, they may also cut back on spending. Ultimately, the Fed’s decision on interest rates will have a significant impact on the economy and financial markets, with increased borrowing costs potentially leading to negative consequences on various sectors. Experts are divided on whether rate cuts are necessary to support economic growth or whether the economy can sustain itself despite elevated interest rates.

The US Economy's Strategies for Avoiding the Longevity Trap
==========
Tony Roth, CIO of Wilmington Trust Investment Advisors, Inc., discusses the economic implications of the increasing longevity of the American population. The projected increase in the population aged 65 and older from 58 million in 2022 to an estimated 82 million by 2050 presents challenges for economic growth. However, Roth believes that the U.S. is uniquely positioned to overcome these challenges and capitalize on the economic opportunities associated with longevity. The declining birth rate in the U.S., combined with the aging population, is reshaping the age distribution of the workforce. Older workers are likely to continue working, contributing to the economy and societal changes. The U.S. benefits from an aging workforce that can positively impact the economy by influencing the dependency ratio. Workers staying in the workforce longer can contribute more to the economy, benefiting their financial well-being and that of younger workers through mentorship and training opportunities. Adaptability and flexibility in the labor market are key success factors to support older workers in an aging society. The U.S. is recognized for its labor flexibility, enabling workers to switch jobs and companies to restructure their workforces as needed. Advancements in technology, particularly AI, can help reshape the narrative of an aging workforce by enhancing productivity and complementing the skills of human workers. Investing in health, relationships, and finances early on is essential as individuals prepare for longer careers. Embracing changing dynamics and adapting to longer careers can ensure a future where economic growth is catalyzed by longevity. The U.S. is preparing for a significant demographic shift towards an aging population, with both challenges and opportunities on the horizon. Seeking professional advice and considering individual circumstances is important when making financial decisions in light of these demographic shifts.

IMF Increases Growth Forecast for US Economy, Recommends Caution with Rate Cuts
==========
The International Monetary Fund predicts that the US economy will be a major driver of global growth this year, with a forecasted growth rate of 2.7%. The European economy is expected to struggle due to high interest rates and previous rises in energy costs. The global economy as a whole is expected to expand by 3.2%, with China’s economy growing by 4.6% and India’s by 6.8%. The strong performance of the US economy has been attributed to robust productivity and employment growth, as well as strong demand, leading to cautious recommendations for monetary easing by the Federal Reserve. However, there are concerns of overheating and rising inflation in the US, prompting traders to postpone expectations of a Fed interest rate cut. The US economy has already surpassed its pre-pandemic growth trend. Inflation is expected to average 5.9% globally this year. China’s economic growth poses a risk to global inflation, with a higher-than-expected expansion rate in the first quarter leading to support for oil prices. The IMF warns of the need for careful monitoring of inflation in various regions, with strategies to address potential risks and maintain stability in the face of economic uncertainties.

The Influence of Family and Media Pressure on Weight Loss During Adolescence on Self-Perception in Adulthood
==========
New research led by the University of Bristol has found that people who felt pressure to lose weight as teenagers from family or the media, females, individuals who are not heterosexual, and those experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage are most at risk of ‘internalised’ weight stigma. This study, published in The Lancet Regional Health Europe, is the first to use a large UK sample to examine who is most susceptible to this form of stigma. Feeling pressure from family to lose weight, experiencing weight-related teasing from family members, and feeling pressure from the media to lose weight as a teenager were all associated with higher levels of internalised weight stigma at age 31. Being bullied in adolescence and adulthood was also independently linked to internalised weight stigma at age 31. The study found clear variations in internalised weight stigma among different population groups, with females, non-heterosexual individuals, people who spent more time as NEETs in their 20s, and those whose mothers had fewer educational qualifications being at greater risk. Dr. Amanda Hughes, Research Fellow at the Bristol Medical School, highlighted the long-lasting impacts of family environment, bullying, and media pressure on how individuals value themselves based on their weight as adults. The researchers intend to delve into the psychological processes through which social factors influence internalised weight stigma in further detail. By understanding the mechanisms underlying this stigma, interventions and strategies can be developed to mitigate its impact and promote greater acceptance and support for individuals of all body types.
