v pozorovatelné části se podle odhadů nachází 200 miliard galaxií. Naše galaxie Mléčné dráhy sousedi se souhvězdím Andromedy.
MLÉČNÁ DRÁHA
má průměr mezi 150 až 200 tisíci světelnými lety. Obsahuje 100 až 400 miliard hvězd a více než 100 miliard planet a 17 miliard exoplanet o přibližné velikosti Země. V obyvatelných zónách hvězd podobných Slunci a červených trpaslíků v Mléčné dráze může být až 40 miliard planet pozemského typu. Z toho 11 miliard planet může obíhat kolem hvězd podobných Slunci. Planety typu Země mohou být početnější než plynní obři.
Hvězdy a plyn obíhají okolo centra Galaxie rychlostí přibližně 220 kilometrů za sekundu. Mléčná dráha jako celek se pohybuje rychlostí přibližně 600 km za sekundu vzhledem k referenčním bodům mimo Galaxii.
Přibližně 90% hmotnosti Mléčné dráhy je dalekohledy neviditelná, neboť nevysílá ani nepohlcuje elektromagnetické záření “temná hmota”.
SLUNEČNÍ SOUSTAVA
se nachází ve vzdálenosti necelých 26 tisíc světelných let od galaktického jádra, v kterém se nachází intenzivní zdroj rádiového záření. Předpokládá se, že jde o supermasivní černou díru o hmotnosti 4,100 milionu hmotnosti Slunce. Jádro Galaxie se nachází směrem k souhvězdí Střelce, kde je Mléčná dráha nejjasnější.
Slunce oběhne kolem jádra galaxie za 240 milionů let.
Astronomové NASA předpověděli scénář gigantické kolize naší galaxie se sousední velkou mlhovinou v souhvězdí Andromedy, k níž má dojít za čtyři miliardy let.
