🛰 Tracking world leaders through a sports app

From Trump to Putin, including Macron

An in-depth investigation by Le Monde revealed that Strava data could be used to track the movements of leaders thanks to their bodyguards

Le Monde has identified 26 American security agents who had been clocking miles while attending official work trips, VELO reports

Twelve members of France's Presidential Security Group and six members of Russia's Federal Protection Service were also identified by the paper as regular Strava users. The French outlet dug so deep into its "Strava Leaks" series that it was even able to pinpoint where Macron went on holiday in 2021. Something that can happen not only to the president, but also to "first ladies."

“The affected personnel have been informed,” the service told Le Monde. “We will review this information to determine whether any additional training or guidance is required. We do not assess that there has been any impact on protection operations or threats to any protected person.”

In 2017, the platform published global “heat maps” highlighting all of its users’ favorite routes. These included “heat trails” left by personnel training outside military bases in Afghanistan, Djibouti and Syria.

Something similar happened in 2022, when Strava detectives identified and tracked security personnel working from bases in Israel.

Users can set their activities to “private” and thus remove their workouts from public information.

However, “private” activities are still added by Strava to its “community-powered features,” including its global heatmaps.

The popular fitness app has recently launched a new feature designed to encourage users to be more aware of their personal safety. With a quick click, you can make your routes private, and while it takes one more click, you can also hide them from global heat maps.

📱 Goodbye Google as we know it?

Google is in court, an anti-trust lawsuit.

Several Justice Department lawyers argue that Google should not only sell its Chrome browser, but also break it up into smaller pieces.

Selling Chrome is for one simple reason:

It is a way to keep millions of users tied not only to their browser, but also to their search engine and associated tools.

But here comes the best part: What about Android?

Well, while they won't get rid of Android, they do want to do something: Separate Android from the rest of Google products.

Basically, they would force Google services and other apps like YouTube, Maps, etc. to be installed separately.

If this were the case, people would have a totally clean Android by default in some cases (at the expense of what each manufacturer introduces)

Perhaps better times are coming when it will be easier to use Android without having to rely on Google services.

📱 Improvements to Signal video calls

Signal has recently shown a new feature for its users:

You won't have to group someone up to join the call.

This makes it much easier to make video calls without having to go through what happens to many people: They get rid of dozens of groups that they only use once or every very long time.

And what's so special about it?

In my opinion, it could make development easier so that you can talk to anyone, whether they have Signal or not.

This is something that is not currently there and could make Signal a more widely used app, which I very much wish for.

Other news (Less relevant):

· Raise hand button

· Emoji reactions

· Tab dedicated to calls

· More display options

· Updated call settings

🗺 Map of cameras monitoring your car | DeFlock

During a trip from Washington to Alabama, Will Freeman began noticing all the cameras he was driving around in, and upon investigation discovered they were automatic license plate readers (ALPRs), primarily used by police.

In Huntsville, Freeman noticed these cameras forming a ring around the city center, leading him to start DeFlock on Open Street Map to map license plate surveillance camera locations around the world to determine their location and address.

To date, DeFlock has identified more than 1,700 cameras in the United States and more than 5,600 worldwide.

The project also aims to offer navigation routes that allow drivers to avoid these cameras, although it also indicates that in some places this is impossible. Which makes DeFlocks a fundamental tool to highlight this and try to find options.

Open source project DeFlock is mapping the locations of license plate surveillance cameras around the world.

💸 Bitcoin taking off

#Bitcoin has recently seen its price in dollars increase by 18.7% in the last week

Everyone assumes that following the results of the US elections

It could be, but remember that whoever has bought Bitcoin has not been able to lose.

The asset that makes you sovereign over your money, that you can transfer without borders or asking for permission, that you don't need permission to use... It's stronger than ever and everything indicates that it will be like that

Living sane in an insane society is not easy. It’s a daily battle between your ego and your mind. The mind drags you to the old settings, while your ego wants to remain in the new settings, where it seeks pleasure in discovering truths that would eventually shake many minds.

📱 Apple rewards for privacy failures

In order to defend the security and privacy of its new "Apple Intelligence" system (Private Cloud Computing), those from Cupertino are offering from $50,000 to $1,000,000 for those who find privacy flaws.

"Because we care deeply about any compromise to user privacy or security, we will consider any security issue that has a significant impact to PCC for an Apple Security Bounty reward, even if it doesn't fit into a published category."

A good way to encourage the search for gaps in the system that may end up being more than just a mistake

Let me analyze the potential impact on #Bitcoin 's price if USDT fails:

Immediate Impact:

- Severe downward pressure, likely causing a sharp crash

- Historical precedent: When smaller stablecoins like UST failed, #BTC dropped ~40%

- USDT's failure would be far more impactful as it represents the largest stablecoin market cap

- Massive forced liquidations of leveraged positions would amplify the crash

- Potential for cascading margin calls across exchanges

Short-term Effects:

- Trading volume would drop significantly as USDT pairs account for major BTC liquidity

- Panic selling as traders try to exit positions

- Reduced ability to arbitrage between exchanges

- Price discovery becomes more difficult

- Wider bid-ask spreads due to reduced liquidity

Medium-term Recovery Factors:

- Bitcoin could actually benefit long-term as a "flight to quality"

- Some USDT holders might rush to convert to BTC as a safe haven

- Market could shift to alternative trading pairs (USD, USDC, EUR)

- Historical resilience: BTC has recovered from previous market shocks

The severity would largely depend on:

1. How suddenly USDT fails

2. Whether the failure is partial or complete

3. The state of broader market conditions

4. How quickly alternative trading pairs can absorb volume

Nobody will love you if you are poor in your 30s and 40s
