Only way to get them dark is firing them. When you look at a mixture of tobacco, there are light and dark pieces in most blends. Some depends on the type and some depends if it's been hung out with smoke going through it.
I picked some dried and fired tobacco off the road once, tried smoking it in my pipe. It was awful. I'll stick to the stuff blended by people that know what they are doing.
