I've been writing and thinking for two years now about "rewilding your attention"

That's Tom Critchlow's phrase for decoupling our focus away from the viral stuff that big social-networks algorithms are promoting

Yesterday, I did a talk for Medium Day about it ...

... and this essay summarizes the talk: https://clivethompson.medium.com/a-quick-primer-on-rewilding-your-attention-892af77c7bca

It’s a highly subjective measure 😅

If you feel like you already have a nicely off the beaten track diet of culture and info, you’re probably good

Terrific! It’s been a low key obsession of mine for a while now 😂

Love it!

"break your algorithm" is an amazing phrase for that type of human curation

People of Mastodon!

This Sat., Aug. 12, at 3:30 pm ...

... I'm doing a short online talk about "Rewilding Your Attention"

It's part of Medium Day

COME ON BY! Free registration here: https://hopin.com/events/medium-day-2023/registration

Shoot me some questions during the talk, it's got Q&A

Yeah!

The hardware is nice though. Good battery life and a responsive screen

I showed one of those to my teenagers a while ago and asked them to guess what it was

They couldn’t even get in the ballpark

It was as if I’d handed them a component from a crashed ufo

Yeah, the Amazon flavor of Android is awful

Their silk browser is … super meh

Ugh, that really sucks

I know a lot of people who rely on X/Twitter for connections to their communities, for work, as a market, etc

I don't want the place to fall apart and turn into a septic tank

There are still a ton of people posting interesting stuff, who I miss ...

But among the many other reasons I dove more heavily into mastodon and the fediverse, one was that I worried Twitter -- the whole damn thing -- would just flat-up 404 without warning, and all those connections to people would go poof

I don't spend much time here talking about X/Twitter -- I don't use it terribly often any more, but ...

... whenever I open a browser to check it, I'm startled by how long it takes to load the messages and posts

A *lot* of spinny loading-wheels, for many full seconds

I have no special insight into what's happening on the back end, but yowsa it doesn't look great from the outside user's perspective
