It's an exciting place for those of us here now. I don't see most people adopting at this level of raw communication; the curated user experience they're used to isn't an option yet, but in a free market of client apps, those options will be developed before long.
Yeah; Lightning is a layer 2 network that uses the Blockchain for final settlement, while a "light client" is just an on-chain node/wallet that doesn't sync the entire Blockchain. Despite the names, they aren't actually related that much.
Think of a lightning channel sort of like a bar tab; individual transactions while the channel is open are just shifting balance between two parties; either one can choose to close the channel with an on-chain operation, but all that's recorded on chain is the final split.
