I just had a 2s/vb on-chain transaction confirmed in a few hours this morning. I say go for it!

If it get's purged the transaction didnt happen at all. Problem is that every node got its own mempool. So a miner could just store all transactions and never purge them. But your node could have purged it. Its tricky to explain.
