I hate to say it, but I think I like Rust.

I've avoided forking Mastodon for a long time because I don't want to deal with the insanity of maintaining a Ruby codebase.

However, I /may/ write a small external proxy, stand-alone and separate from Mastodon, to strip all the tracking shit from links people post here on NAS (Youtube ?si= parameter, amazon link parameters, corporate media tracking, etc).

Adding that to my list of summer projects (after my IRC project, and a few others) for when it gets too hot to comfortably work outside.

hear me out... globally available, instant payments for EVERYONE who joins nostr, INSTANTLY. No setup required.

How? Well.. NUTS! Magic nuts at that.

1. user creates npub -> creates your nuts address

2. UI displays that user has a nuts address. They can get zapped RIGHT AWAY. That's right - everyone can get zapped IMMEDIATELY! Forget 4% address in profile bullshit.. 100% adoption!!

3. User can change their address to an LN one of course.. or to other cashu address in settings. Upon modifying a field or detected LN address, the UI changes the visual to show its an LN address or it's been modified. Why the change? Well, so people don't go zapping large amounts into the void if the new user never claims their nuts.

At this point, we don't even need cashu websites, because you can do everything in the client UI.

What about centralization?

OK. Rotate trusted mints. It's no different than what Primal has going now as far as I know. You are trusting someone for a bit and have the option to transfer your sats out. Same with nuts. Concerned about rugs? Swap your address to an LN one. Or.. choose another mint, or add your own if you're a pro.

This would bring nostr to 100% sats accessibility.

What about lost sats? F'em! Thank you for your contribution to bitcoin my humble sirs and ladies. The tradeoff of global(nostr) zap adoption is massively better IMO.

When I was a teen, my stepfather decided to pay us kids cash for chores. He thought it would be a great way to get things done around the house. I agreed. As a kid, any extra cash was great! I should point out that I did not need incentives to do the things he asked in the first place, but for whatever reason he thought he’d do it this way. So he’d make a list of things to do, thinking it would take a while to complete. Well, I was so motivated that I finished all of the tasks the same day. I added up all the money he owed me, smiling and thinking about all the things I could buy. I show him all of the things completed, expecting a nice payout and … nothing happens. No new crinkly dollar bills in my hand. Ok. So I don’t want to be annoying and say nothing, thinking maybe later …

The next day, no payment.

The day after, nothing.

The day after that I pointed out that we had an agreement But instead I get some excuse.

At that point it was abundantly clear I would never collect that chore money. This destroyed any trust I had in this person from that moment on.

Yeah, I get it, he was already providing for us and I should be thankful, and I was. But, making a promise you don’t keep is a big no. The sad part is that I did not need this incentive in the first place.
