The Anatomy of Revolution by Crane Brinton lays out the revolutionary cycle based on the English Civil War, French Rev, and the Bolshevik Rev. Revolution begins with Rule of the Moderates (People trying to change the government) and then that leads to the Accession of the Extremists. Each transition is marked by a coup. Trump's election doesnt feel like a coup but maybe it meets the definition. This whole thing today def feels like an attempt at a coup tho. The Accession is where the Jacobins took hold, typically dictatorial with loss of liberty in the name of virtue, reigns of terror and whatnot.
