This bothers me much more than I thought it would. Years ago, legislation was passed which requires all Australian ISPs to retain all customer metadata for two years. I was livid. No-one I knew cared a dime. "I've got nothing to hide" they said... The floor was empty when it was voted in.
The apathy from the public around these issues tells me we've already lost.
