I suspect this exact mechanism is what will bring normies here. I don’t know of any relays currently that require payment to read but that’s not difficult (I don’t think). I think more likely there will be paid image hosting that will only unblur the image with payment.
I’ve always been a lurker only on there but barely check it anymore.

How are you doing it on a public relay? It’s so hard to find real people in global, I poke my head in regularly to try and find some more follows but it’s insane.
It wouldn’t. This has been tried many times before but in different ways and it always fails because eventually you run out of people who want to use this stuff just because it’s different. The monetary aspect of this is the killer app.
Does anyone here have an in with Peter Schiff? It’d be amusing to have him experience Nostr and challenge his belief that nobody is using bitcoin to pay for anything.
Yeah the regime has been doing this with people and bots for years now. It’s an unholy alliance between the various intelligence agencies, state department and ngos. Things like Chatgpt will make it much cheaper and more convincing at first but I actually think ultimately your average person will become a lot more suspicious and use tools to detect if they’re being botted.
A lot of the activity on there is artificial activity used to steer opinion and the discourse. They make topics that nobody real cares about become center focus and then real people get wrapped up in talking about it. Twitter “looks the other way” because all they wanted was as much activity as possible. I’m not going to simp for Elon but there’s a reason that the whole system had such a negative reaction to an unknown quantity like Elon take over the whole thing. I doubt Elon ever gets to the bottom of what was and is truly going on there but it’s just a big machine to warp people’s perception of reality.
Decentralized replacements for the centralized services are going to have this risk. VPN is a partial answer and maybe kill switch type functionality in-app so that it can only go over predetermined outbound routes to prevent ip exposure. In the US this isn’t a huge issue for now, provided you aren’t breaking the law but not everyone is that fortunate.
It’s just one big psyop. Nothing that is popular on there is actually popular.
