FWIW, I don't think Bitcoin actually requires any funding to operate. Satoshi built it without any sponsorship. Most core devs are and will always be maximalists devoted to the longevity of Bitcoin.

Corporate sponsorship could create corporate expectations...

Not saying it'll turn out that way in practice, as their expectations will likely get frustrated by the decentralised nature of node operators refusing to validate bad ideas.

Telling a public business manager that their proposed strategy is crap and if they keep implementing it you'll use the financial system to go against them is not illegal. Otherwise the jails would be cramped with hedge funds employees.

Regardless, you asked what the question was, I gave you the question. Whether he decides to answer it honestly, dishonesty or not answering at all its a different story. A good journalist/communicator should ask the question anyway and press within reason to get the answer.

Isn’t the incentive for devs to maintain Bitcoin built in the protocol? Devs owning coin should be all that’s needed and represent a purer incentive compared to Wall Street money imo.

Donations welcome of course but should be extra.
