when I was a college freshman, I went to the dorms. I ended up being assigned a roommate who I had never met. I was really nervous! Would it be someone crazy? Would they be a party-animal? How could I focus on my studies?
But I ended up with a roommate who was very studious, and quite friendly. His name was Johnny. He was a little guy, 5'7" and full of quippy witticisms. Knowing Johnny helped me come out of my shell and meet several others who ended up being friends for years. Come my sophomore year, we ended up rooming together again and had several of our other friends join us. And then for the 2 years after that we got an apartment, the 4 of us together. It was fantastic!
The two of us became a duo: and I'm a big guy! 6'6" when I'm slouching. We were like a walking meme.
In my senior year, close to the end of my college tenure, one night I got drunk and was watching a video with Johnny. He joked that I didn't understand the plot, and drunk I took offense to what he had said. We ended up wrestling over the matter. I figured I would have an easy win, due to my bigger bodyweight and leverage. But: Johnny regularly took weightlifting classes, so he was SO STRONG. It was like he was toying with me. Even when I used underhanded moves that always availed me against my brother .. Johnny was unimpressed. Eventually he held me down and made me say 'uncle.' Then I went to bed to recover.
It's been 20 years, and how I miss that man. If only he weren't straight!
