All of this talk about cheese made me rush home to eat some 🏆

APPARENTLY a startup company that began in Colorado called Atom Computing has beat IBM in reaching the 1,000 qubit milestone 🫨

If true it would basically mean that things are moving fast in the world of quantum computing. So fast that they say a platform could become available for users as early as next year 👀

Our modern day computers use BINARY BITS where there are two options, 1 and 0, and you can only have one at a time.

While quantum computers use QUBITS and exist anywhere BETWEEN 1 and 0, in a non binary fluid state.

So instead of a tedious series of trial and error, a quantum computer can calculate all options AT ONCE.

So in a nutshell, Atom Computing says that they have built the world’s first nuclear spin qubit quantum computer from optically trapped neutral atoms ⚛️. Which sounds unbelievably ridiculous🤔, but it means they used a different tactic than IBM. IBM uses super conducting qubits, which is challenging because it requires temperatures just above absolute zero. While Atom Computing uses an array of lasers (not as high maintenance). Anyways, this does not mean that you will be able to just walk into a a store next year and buy a quantum computer because the quantum state is very delicate, short lived, and even sensitive to noise. Also 1,000 qubits isn’t enough to do anything useful, so the platform that they are saying may be available for users next year would only be able to do very basic functions, but if true, it is still such an impressive / scary milestone.

I must admit that I am not a QC expert, BUT I should also say that,

- I didn’t find any actual proof of this

- I had never heard of this guy or his company before

- If this is true, then it’s cool, but something just feels off🧐
