There were so many cases of the cops being absolutely fucking useless in the first few crucial hours of people disappearing, that we literally just passed a federal law that's supposed to make police departments and government agencies respond to missing person reports more rapidly and coordinate their efforts better. I don't really have all that much hope that it'll spur LE and government agencies to get their shit together.

It’s not really a solution to UXO, but from a numbers perspective you can be sure there will be significantly less fully armed munitions lying around. That could mean the difference between a few dozen yearly casualties and a few hundred.
