I don't really know what to think of it as I don't know what's going on. To date, Canada has been pretty good to bitcoiners. We have lots of onramps, including kyc free options, and people living on other jurisdictions aren't as fortunate.

Hopefully things stay the way they are and don't change too much.

I will disagree because if you own the private keys it's your bitcoin, but yes if you can run a node you should to verify your own transactions period.

How can you verify that bitcoin resides in that address?

Without running a node, you cannot confirm it and you are trusting someone else to provide you the info.
