1966: Kwame Nkrumah, the first leader of independent Ghana, co-founder of the Non-Aligned Movement and author of the book "Neocolonialism", was deposed in a coup backed by the US/Britain. Nkrumah attempted to modernize Ghana & hoped to build a united and prosperous Africa. 
1973: Salvadore Allende, the democratically elected leader of Chile, was deposed in a US-backed coup. The pinochet dictatorship was installed in his place. Allende was deposed because he sought to restore Chilean control over its vast copper reserves. 
1967: Sukarno, the first leader of Indonesia, since gaining independence from Dutch colonial rule, was deposed in a US-backed coup that installed a military dictatorship. In the years that followed, the regime ki!!ed over a million Indonesian communists. 
1964: João Goulart, the democratically elected leader of Brazil, was deposed by a US-backed coup. Goulart had begun enacting social reforms, including increasing labour protections. Goulart also refused to obey US demands such as cut-off relations with Cuba. 
1961: Patrice Lumumba, the first democratically elected leader of the Republic of Congo, was assassinated in a coup backed by the US/UK/Belgium, because he sought to restore control over the country's resources. They installed the Mobutu dictatorship in his place. 
1954: Jacobo Árbenz, the democratically elected leader of Guatemala, was deposed in a US-backed coup to protect profits of the United Fruit Company (now known as Chiquita).
