So as it turns out, indeed, fish don't exist.... http://earthguide.ucsd.edu/fishes/kinds/kinds_what.html#:~:text=Taxonomically%20speaking%2C%20there%20is%20no,part%20is%20the%20specific%20epithet.

Slightly embarassed not to know that before.

I much enjoyed this book- very slow start but picked up quickly enough to keep going; good #SummerRead #bookstodon #NatureBooks #biography #fish

Two things I thought would be worse:

1. In 2020 I thought there was a good chance we'd have totally runaway inflation because of public spending. (Maybe the bad news is we didn't have enough public spending)

2. In 2022 I thought a GOP-Congress would set about shutting down the government and impeaching Joe Biden.

To avoid a file-drawer effect I try to post my Ls and learn from them :)

British emigrant things: I don't even know whether Spud U like exists any more.

What's the deal with the nostr:npub1l0m9ansmw4uf3nmw2llqma37t6eldmw6lc6dcg2hfsuvtsqadqtqgtfxn2 aversion to district heating? nostr:npub10m85xqjwf52hm4cxqk5g05776h493m3mldpn366ehxu698kv7dysdeazwg has been speaking about it as being normal across Europe, for years. I keep waiting for it to be discussed as an option here, but we just get middle class solutions that aren't doable by most people, being touted. How does a ground source heat pump work if you live in a tenement or if you can't afford to insulate your stone built cottage? I'd like to use the excess heat from industry more, but how?

Applied for five jobs today so attempted another Roadwarden playthrough. Very frustrating since I failed to tie up all the loose ends in 30 days!

I think I'll try again one last time in story mode, with unlimited time. It's just so satisfying how there are so many non-violent solutions and how you can choose which factions to help and which to suppress.

nostr:npub178h85fgemmdfrtwxq5uehw985m0ve7akcm60z9y5z845dd4hw5ds6rhyhr And I'm sorry I didn't wait for the end of your entire thread to reply. I see it wasn't neccessarily about media as such :)

nostr:npub178h85fgemmdfrtwxq5uehw985m0ve7akcm60z9y5z845dd4hw5ds6rhyhr This summer the breaking news about fires and floods has become inescapable. But at the same time the news media hasn't digested this news and taken it onboard like it does with other news facts. So we get isolated coverage of disasters as events, but then a ringfenced coverage of everything else where normality prevails.

Hope things are different now.

I often wonder if people that think everybody is selfish and greedy have really never experienced love and friendship.

Did they never have a loving mother? a family, friends, good neighbours? Have they really never experienced the kindness of strangers?

See also the 'all x-people are like that, but you happen to be one of the good ones.' Hence it being harder to hold these beliefs in cities where you constantly mix with new people.

well, whatever the complexities, I'm guessing we'll be finding out soon enough

nostr:npub1g0tuf634rz4suczwj7kgnecr6cyt0eu9xmp3sp0fku68mqehq4msp3tvm4 I'm sure there are people on Mastodon who have worked on this.

Good point... smaller? but perhaps more natural cooling (for now) as further North.... but then again, heating up might have more immediate impact?

nostr:npub1g0tuf634rz4suczwj7kgnecr6cyt0eu9xmp3sp0fku68mqehq4msp3tvm4 The processes that cause sea cooling and warming can involve so many perverse and counter-intuitive outcomes that I really want someone who understands the underlying mechanisms to help me understand. The Arctic in general is heating faster than the global average, and this might cause more cooling ice melt to flow into the Baltic, or it might cause the Baltic to also warm faster, I don't know :)
