Is the Ukraine war more like Vietnam or World War 2?

If it is more like Vietnam, then America will lose despite a mighty military industrial complex.

If it is more like World War 2, then defeating Putin is a cause worth fighting for - like defeating Hitler in World War 2.

Of course, history may rhyme but it does not repeat.

This old peacenik historian will now give his opinion on which rhymes better with the Ukraine war.

The more like Vietnam case starts with the fact that America has been at war with so many countries since World War 2 and the only winner has been the military industrial complex which has brilliantly “manufactured consent” of the people for these bad wars. Exhibit no 1 in this case is America’s broken promise not to expand NATO. I would probably have been a draft dodger in the Vietnam war if I had been in America at that age and I am happy that Harold Wilson in the UK where I was at that age refused the American invitation to join the war.

Vietnam beat America’s mighty military industrial complex, because they were fighting for their country. Today the Ukrainian people are fighting for their country. We have the luxury of fighting a proxy war where the Ukrainian people are doing the actual fighting and dying. I see no sign of an anti war peace movement in Ukraine

With the 20/20 vision of hindsight, the peaceniks before World War 2 were at best stupid appeasers and at worst closet fascists. At the time many thought that Hitler had a genuine grievance about the reparations that Germany was forced to pay at the end of World War 1 in 1918; today many think that Putin has a genuine grievance about NATO expansion.

I think Hitler would have gone to war even without the reparations excuse and ditto Putin without the NATO excuse.

If Biden helps Ukraine beat Russia by only using money and not putting American lives at risk, I think that is an amazing result.

Maybe my consent has been brilliantly “manufactured” and I am simply a naive fool.

I looked at Mastodon vs Nostr vs Twitter. The techie in me prefers Nostr to Mastodon due to ease/difficulty of switching apps. Nostr has nailed identity. However lack of users tells me Twitter is safe until next Bitcoin bull market - not too far away is my guess.

Happy Holi to all my Indian friends on Nostr

Newbie here. Been on Twitter since 2009, but now a Nostr fan in 2023
