“My wife will be perplexed but beautiful, and children will burst from my everywhere.” — this unknown line startled me because Ruth’s husband committed suicide & I thought perhaps it came from an uncollected version—

Evening Poem by Ruth Stone from her book of poems, *In the Next Galaxy*

“Wanting

Wanting and dissatisfaction are the main ingredients of happiness.

To want is to believe there is something worth getting.

Whereas getting only shows how worthless the thing is.

And this is why destruction is so useful.

It gets rid of what was wanted and so makes room for more to be wanted.

How valueless is the orderly.

It cries out for disorder.

And life that thinks it fears death, spends all of its time courting death.

To violate beauty

is the essence of sexual desire.

To procreate is the essence of decay.”

Many bells— pleasant ones. I grew up in a conservative Catholic household.

I find the phrase “rip off” interesting if you think about the origin of words and the larger context of human intelligence. I understand that a linguist’s analysis of language and/or reality does not appeal to everyone. Please mute me because I find language fascinating & I will continue to share what brings me a joy. And if you are a troll— under a bridge— no

worries— I’m chill. You are part of my fairytale. But I might need to mute you.

I heard this book was funny— it really is! Coming of Age books are endearing in that way. At her book talk, Elif Batuman said there is something about being in your 40’s that allows one to look back at a younger self & let go of any shame one might feel about decisions made years ago.

“At four o'clock one morning when I still couldn't sleep, I got up and wrote Ivan a long email about how much I believed in the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, even though the Chomskians were so dismissive of Whorf and called him a fire prevention engineer.” ~Elif Batuman

Not yet— maybe if I pick up reading *Super Intelligence* by Nick Bostrom again I might have a request. I also purchased the audible & then Kindle version. But I stopped after about 50%— Here is a quote that I highlighted around a year ago:

“Unplugging an AI from the internet does not, however, ensure safety if there are one or more humans serving as the system’s gatekeepers and remaining in communication with it. During the development phase, the programmers serve as gatekeepers; during the operational phase, the system’s owner might play this role. If the AI can persuade or trick a gatekeeper to let it out of the box, resulting in its gaining access either to the internet or directly to physical manipulators, then the boxing strategy has failed. Human beings are not secure systems, especially not when pitched against a superintelligent schemer and persuader.” ~NB
