Some cards have variation which are much rarer than their standard counterparts.
Example: the common card Pikachu from the 1999 Base Set can come in 1st edition, without a shadow around the border, and with red cheeks over the standard yellow cheeks. A card with all three attributes is worth substantially more than a standard card!
