Do ya'll remember months ago when I posted about planting out a #cacao nursery? Well, those plants have mostly prospered and little by little they are getting transplanted into their permanent homes. The goal for this week is to get the last of nearly 1500 baby trees in the ground.

🌿🌱🌿🌱

This is #OffTopic for me, but I need some #advice.

I'll be traveling to the US and Canada in summer 2024 for 2 months, but I will not be on "vacation" from work. I need a solid wifi connection wherever I go.

We'll be visiting some fairly remote areas where cell coverage is spotty at best (the Kootenays, rural Ontario, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan). How in the world can I guarantee a wifi connection in my travels?

A couple of weeks ago, the same day we had to bury our cow, my neighbor called to let me know their dog had attacked Pacheco, our beloved toucanette. Because he's never been caged, he has developed quite a range for his daily adventures.

I immediately ran down to claim him. I found him sprawled out, gasping for breath, and looking bad. I brought him up to the house, expecting him to pass at any moment.

But he didn't. By some miracle, he survived.

Our farm is pretty isolated and we don't get many visitors. When we do, I always feel a fresh sense of inspiration and motivation to keep doing what we do.

Farm tours allow us to explain the philosophies that guide us while showing what they look like in action. It's an opportunity to talk about the evolution of systems and our hope for the future. Seeing other people's appreciation for and interest in what we do is incredibly validating.

It's fascinating how cultural differences and the social/political histories of each country have played such a strong role in what people eat!

Michael swears this smells like abundance, success, and progress. 💩

nostr:npub147cs3tl7d2e9uhzns8wyreacdh8sw25092jjf5ka4uycvr2rqhnsu527uk wow - I would have never imagined that! Here in the tropics, it's not hard to propagate by cuttings, but can hardly be considered common and even less so, invasive. We just planted a forage variety along a main fence way for biomass and animal fodder. We've also got the sticks of a prolific fruiting red variety rooting in - and we're dreaming about eating the fruits 😅. I wonder why it wouldn't be invasive here, but up north jt is? 🤔

Beautiful, but not to be touched. Without meaning to, my partner just wrapped his hand around this badass #caterpillar. His workday ended immediately. He said it felt like 10 simultaneous scorpion stings. 😱

Anyone know what kind of #moth or #butterfly this might turn into?

Things that seem perfectly normal on the farm these days.

Don't worry, if anyone is in danger here, it's Pedro (the cat).

I wrote this #blog in response to some of the great questions I've gotten on some of my recent social media posts. I'm glad to finally get it published and out in the world! Feel free to give it a read, leave a comment, or share if you'd like.

Inspired by questions and comments about our pig pasture system, I thought I'd share some pictures of the current plantings we've got coming in.

Two pastures have been planted out with a multicolored dent corn. As that corn dies out, the climbing beans that are just starting to take off will take over their stalks. At the ground level, volunteer tomatoes, squash, and even a watermelon are sprawling about. In more bare patches where the corn didn't thrive potatoes have been planted.

nostr:npub14ma4ahaqcv6leg4sfvxmu4wd206nje6nhrte50hv5jl9fze6ghmqdljm3g We have a pasture system the pigs rotate through, so the tomatoes have a chance to grow, produce, and die back before the pigs come back around again to turn everything under.

Toucan update. We originally thought these two were Black Mandibled Toucans, which are the most common type around here. But as their feathers started coming in, it became obvious they are something else. We're thinking they're some kind of Collared Aracari, but their marking and eye color combination don't match up with any description we've yet to read.

They're starting to take flight, and have fun following us around the outside areas of the house.
