The secret really was to start with more clay!

BUT I learned that centering six pounds of clay is ✨really hard!✨ Even when it is brand new, right out of the bag with perfect hydration, etc.

As the old joke goes, how do you end up with a million dollars? Start with two million… I lost probably 1/3-1/2 the clay to centering issues.

But I do have my bowl 😁 and now I know to try three or four pounds next time.

Also, meet the shrink ruler, a cool tool that measures how big your piece WILL BE after it shrinks in firing.

Just completed my 12th hour with my Japanese language instructor.

Here's a few of the quirky/intriguing things I've come across so far:

1- If you can count to 12 and say the word がつ (gatsu) you know all the months of the year.

いちがつ (ichigatsu) にがつ (nigatsu) and so on.

2- There is a different word for existing/having something, depending on whether that thing is sentient or not.

います (imasu) vs あります(arimasu)

3- There is no past, present and future tenses. Only past, and non-past.

4- You tweak the verb depending on what you're trying to say.

I will watch a movie

えいがをみます

eiga o mimasu

I want to watch a movie

えいがをみたいです

eiga o mitaidesu

Shall we watch a movie?

えいがをみましょか

eiga o mimashou ka

Would you like to watch a movie?

えいがをみせんか

eiga o mimasen ka

5- You use a different word depending on what your counting. For example:

2 people

2 dollars

2 pens

2nd day of the month

there's a different word for <2> ... 🤔

Today at the studio, I finally started something I’ve been thinking about for a while — blue jeans mugs!

Or… ARE they mugs? I haven’t attached handles yet. They could become mugs with handles, tumblers / mugs without handles, or planters at this point. (I’ll also be adding some other details like belt loops and buttons.)

What do you think? Handle or no handle? Without a handle, would you use this as a mug, or as a planter?

My first porcelain cup 🍵💙

A little experiment with the glaze, inside just some transparent glaze and on the outside splashes 💦 of cobalt blue on naked 🍑 porcelain. The bright porcelain really makes it POP🧿 and I love it!!
