The reality is that USA and Russia can come to a deal with regard to Ukraine, but if Ukraine and the EU say no, there is no deal and Trump has achieved nothing besides alienating his closest allies. Ofcourse Trump can start threatening to stop aid to Ukraine, but a quick deal will be out of sight.

With regard to investing in defense, things will move forward quickly. We need to improve our military, we want to spend as much on European companies and less in the US. Regardless all differences between European leaders they can agree upon that. Also Ukraine can play an important role in that future european military industry. They can bring innovation and combat experience.

It's good to realize that the EU is economically far stronger then Russia, so if we start investing in our defense we can easily defend ourselves and/or defeat Russia, the only question is whether we have enough time to (re)build our defenses/military because Russia knows this as well.... That's what worries me..

Frankly the whole tradewar and tariffs issues with the USA are quite minor issues compared to the questions about how the war between Ukraine and Russia will end. A bad outcome there would have disastrous consequences for european economy, security and stability.
