I look forward to learning about your journey.
My partner & I are doing the same thing in the pacific northwest. Our land is mostly forest, with about 3 clear acres. We are deep into soil improvement, planting trees & perennials and forestry / stewardship is also thrown into the mix. The land supports a wide range of wildlife and we have even seen a cougar.
I run a TrueNAS instance w/ 6X 6TB HDDs in RAID-Z3. Not the most efficient, but I'm running the drives until they fail.
For backup, I keep several spare drives around and use one of them to back up critical data like my genome, books, music, movies & personal files.
Your post reminds me I need to pull the server and replace a drive that is on its last legs. I use SMART to monitor the health of the drives. This server has been running continuously since 2017. My server is similar to the one described here:

Good morning. I miss the Colorado environment and the sound the wind makes blowing through all those needles.
I enjoyed your analysis. Thank you for producing.

I would be happy to, with discretion. My partner is also an avid sci fi reader and constructive critic. Excited to see what you are working on that is a diversion or at least different angle from what I'm used to reading. I acknowledge we are not directly connected but i appreciate and value your work and am supportive regardless.
Hi. Welcome. I'm new here, too. Seattle biochemist into macro who follows you on the other platform. Cheers.
