The gadfly of Athens (GA) • Husband to Binky • Father to Lady and the Sons of Thunder • Corrupting the youth of the city to seek the Good, Beautiful, and True since 2016.

I had mentor and teacher who was as close to a contemporary embodiment of Socrates as one can arguably get, and after 15 years of contemplating his philosophy—and therefore Plato’s and Socrates’, his teacher—I believe Socrates did believe one could have knowledge (in a way), but that this “knowledge” is of the True, Beautiful, and Good, and is therefore ineffable: for of it, “nothing can be said.” Hence, one “knows nothing.”

It’s getting to that point in Lent where I start to wonder if I’m growing in virtue and diminishing in vice…even if just a little.

Damn, I forgot how good this album is!

It’s unfortunate this book is out of print. But I’m glad I was able to find a used copy!

I was struggling to understand the point but asked ChatGPT to explain it to me.

Your statement raises two issues concerning the nature of work and the impact of AI on jobs.

Labor is meant for man, not man for labor:

This point suggests that work should serve people rather than people serving work. In other words, the various forms of labor that we have created should benefit individuals and society, as they are products of human intellect and imagination. The goal is for labor to contribute to human well-being and the development of a harmonious social order.

AI and the intellectual fulfillment of labor:

The second point argues that the types of jobs that AI might replace often do not provide opportunities for workers to engage in meaningful intellectual activities. This might lead to a disconnect between the worker and the nature of the work itself. If AI replaces jobs that do not allow workers to utilize their intellectual capacities, it may be seen as a positive development, as it could free people to pursue more fulfilling and intellectually stimulating work.

However, there are concerns about the impact of AI on the job market, as the displacement of certain jobs may not necessarily lead to better opportunities for everyone. The transition period could result in job loss and economic insecurity for many people, as new roles and industries develop to accommodate the increasing presence of AI. This highlights the importance of preparing the workforce for the changes brought about by AI and ensuring that new opportunities are accessible and rewarding for everyone.

Hahaha! Touché. It got some points right, but uses a few problematic terms. Perhaps I’ll elaborate a bit later!

There’s a twofold problem with those jobs: 1. Labor is meant for man, not man for labor. The creation of distinct forms of labor is a product of our intellects and imaginations (over time) and the working of their practices and goods in a given social order; 2. The kinds of jobs that AI (AI, I’d argue, being an ontologically dubious category) would replace rarely enable the laborer to practice any intellectual activities that fittingly correspond the kind of labor in which a person might be engaged.

Mos def! I really wanna see them live now

Nice! Koss was actually my first foray into good headphones. I only listen to music on headphones at home or work, never out and about—so I hear ya there. Plus, not being able to hear what’s going on around me kind of freaks me out. I stopped using headphones/earbuds outdoors years ago for that reason.

I appreciate steaming music services for aiding in music discovery, but I’ve had one too many albums or tracks rendered “not available” to trust them as my de facto music library. I started buying CDs and digital albums 15 years ago to build my library. If you really want to support artists, I think places like Bandcamp is great. Granted, I tend to listen to a lot of stuff off the beaten path, so many of the artists I listen to can be found on there.

That degree of desperation would reveal a lack of temperance on my part. I can wait…even if/when I feel I can’t.

I’m out of coffee filters for my Kalita Wave dripper, so sadly no coffee this morning. Nevertheless, bonmatin!
