Dad. Husband. Math teacher. Runner. Amateur writer. Fisherman. Mediocre guitar player and volleyball player. We need a new cultural enlightenment. I want to be a part of it.

Is there a way to do it where the person teleporting doesn’t get murdered and then recreated somewhere else? (This dawned on me when I was listening to a philosophy podcast a few years ago. Lol)

What a weird way to measure volume.

That’s a great question. And maybe I’m not really sure what I mean. My thought was something like “if unschooling is good - better than traditional schooling - then we would want to be able to export it to as many kids as possible.”

However, it seems - and this is where I could be wrong - that very few people (parents) would have the knowledge or the means to unschool. It’s a similar thing with homeschooling. Honestly, with the right parents homeschooling might be better in a lot of ways than sending your kids to public school, for example. But most parents don’t have the means or knowledge to do it, no less do it in a way that yields better results than public school.

BUT, I could be missing something. As a teacher for a decade or so I know fair bit about public schooling but I don’t know a lot about unschooling.

Sure thing! Here’s an article I wrote in 2018 that gives an overview of a few major concepts. I should move this to Nostr sometime….

7 Areas of Game Theory That Can Help You Understand the World https://medium.com/what-seems-likely/7-areas-of-game-theory-that-can-help-you-understand-the-world-82bb4f87f52b

Sincere question - can unschooling scale?

Game theory should be a mandatory part of the high school curriculum.

I finally finished “In order to live” by Yeonmi Park. She tells her harrowing story of escaping the communist, authoritarian, hellscape that is North Korea. Getting out of North Korea was only the beginning for her and her mother as she had to escape human trafficking while in China, cross the Mongolian desert in the winter in the middle of the night, and face the threat of deportation - and likely execution - back to north Korea at every turn.

She’s incredibly courageous for telling her story, both in standing up in the face of threats from the regime and in reckoning with her own inner struggles.

I highly recommended this book. If nothing else it made me even more grateful that I was lucky enough to be born in the west. #bookstr

Traveling for my daughter’s dance competition and the hotel surprisingly had a full rack of dumbbells. Took advantage.

I don’t really understand this. Importing Wikipedia to a new place will bias it? Does he mean that putting it all here and then having only the people on Nostr edit it will make it biased? nostr:note13nu82tl8rdtjvw3fwc2h8n6t66ua444xljpwf544ckxen50glatq58wkxd

I’ve been thinking about this razor or heuristic in education for a while. It needs a catchy name, but it’s goes something like this.

“Every popular trend in education is causing a nontrivial amount of harm.”

A corollary to that is that educators must work to decipher and mitigate that harm as well as determine whether the tradeoff is worth it.

Another corollary is that groupthink, social pressure to conform, and confirmation bias will make that task difficult. However, if one doesn’t speak out then you risk contributing to pluralistic ignorance, where people recognize a harm but assume everyone else thinks it’s fine because no one individual speaks up.

To make matters worse, educators are disproportionately friendly and don’t like “making waves.”

Remember to turn your clocks forward tonight so that your kids’ sleep patterns can be screwed up for one to two weeks.

One of my favorite #memes.

😂 “actually I was looking forward to the water.”

The Other Guys is one of my favorite comedies.
