Yea, usually has to do with relays. If your followers see you through a relay that is down, then you can’t see that they are following you.
Also, client to client can be different depending on how they do things, also once again the relays that app is using.

Could be the case and always good to think adversarially, but I think he is genuinely trying to do the best for Bitcoin … which would in turn be best for him and all of us.
I think he has done more for bitcoin devs and those building in the space than most of us have. But also provides options for all of other to support as well, either through Opensats or he also advocates donating to devs directly if you’d rather. If anyone doesn’t like him, don’t support through OS, support another way.
There will always be conflicts of interests but just because you’re friends with someone doesn’t mean they aren’t doing good things in the space worthy of support.
I’ve been following Odell since the beginning of RHR and Citadel Dispatch,
Learned a ton from him and Marty. Don’t know him personally other than that, never met him, but I feel he tries to do the best for Bitcoin. I know I’m better off (and I expect many others are as well) because of the effort he’s put in over the years. Onward!
