Let's be clear: Odell doesn't actually care about developers. He was the first to loudly advocate for developer support, accusing Saylor of blocking it. In truth, Opensats is just a vehicle to promote his and his friends' TEN31 VC
Discussion
IMHO Saylor knows his stuff, and is a very sharp mind. He is only in his first bitcoin epoch tho, but ahead of most at that time. He also brings unique knowledge to the table. I think Odell has a conflict of interest in running his VC firm and OpenSats. Nostr could have done a lot better than it has, with the resources it was very kindly given. Especially wrt infrastructure. Ultimately he harms himself by not going full gun on growing the eco system, as much as he could. Saylor tends to be right, and he's not going to throw money at something that he cant verify is going to help. He also runs a software business and knows that most ideas are bad ideas, and well intended engineers trying to tinker with something normally break 2 things for every 1 thing they fix (nostr is getting that way), and he doesnt want bitcoin to go that path. Wise.
It doesnât matter how long you been in bitcoin! Even if you are 10 years in here it doesnât mean that you are the smartest or canât scam people. My whole point is that itâs everything about NGU and pumping the bags and they donât give a shit about devs! Devs for them are just as tools unfortunately! Also comparing Saylor and Odell doesnât make too much sense. Clearly Saylor has more experience in business world than Odell with his tiny fund
Saylor isnt ONLY about NgU, he just thinks bitcoin is the best store of value in the world. Nobody could ever have predicted that 15 years an open source project would have that property (yes, i know the genesis block!). But its an amazing achievment. Bitcoin is many things to many people. No one person can say they know the ONE use for bitcoin. But 10s of millions of users have chosen it as a store of value. We, the bitcoin community have to respect that, and not rug the users that have put their trust in the community. Bitcoin is not all about NgU, lots of things that can be built on top of it, or around it. Nostr being one case.
Honestly the worst possible thing you can do is centralize the funding of the devs. That creates a monoculture and would be 1 mistake away from compromising the properties that we cherish or coopting bitcoin.
OpenSats is spending money about as efficiently as a government agency, but with much less accountability.
I find that deeply ironic.
I would push back that Bitcoin lacks privacy and eventually scaling. I think Saylor has a conflict of interest in Bitcoin not developing so he can offer a banking solution to scaling. It's in his interest for Bitcoin to be state sanctioned to minimise regulatory risk. It's also in his interest for society to be highly governed to provide security for his billions.
I don't know him personally but he's got lots of excellent content on his podcasts, mainly Citadel Dispatch. I listened to and read his stuff extensively. I also shook his hand one time and talked to him about things including Ten31. What he told me was along the lines of:
"I'm also into this VC fund Ten31 but you're most likely better off stacking sats rather than investing in it."
From what I can tell he is definitely NOT a bad actor and NOT just in for the NGU and his supported companies.
Although everyone has self interests I think he had demonstrated plenty of times that he cares about the whole ecosystem when he invited Ten31 competitors on his podcasts many times. He also discloses facts about his involvement in products and openly discusses tradeoffs associated with those products.
I never heard a single unwarranted / uninformed criticism from him about bitcoin-related products. Factor in that Citadel Dispatch is a live and unaudited show.
He's not an angel and nobody, including him never implied that, quite the contrary. I have some differing opinions in areas with him but I can see he's in for the long run and strives to align himself with the movement and the culture like many bitcoiners here on nostr.
Maybe I'm wrong and DYOR. But please don't carelessly dismiss people with superficial statements.
Get a life man
Nope! Fiat grifters will be called out
Sure, if that was the situation. All you're doing is shit posting everyday, and it's like wtf are you doing for bitcoin? Driving for Uber? đ€Ł
i'm sure you meant to tag nostr:nprofile1qqsqfjg4mth7uwp307nng3z2em3ep2pxnljczzezg8j7dhf58ha7ejgpzemhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuurjd9kkzmpwdejhgqguwaehxw309ahx7um5wghx6at5d9h8jampd3kx2apwvdhk6qg5waehxw309aex2mrp0yhxgctdw4eju6t0ke3nsp when you made this post. don't worry. I got you.
Could be the case and always good to think adversarially, but I think he is genuinely trying to do the best for Bitcoin ⊠which would in turn be best for him and all of us.
I think he has done more for bitcoin devs and those building in the space than most of us have. But also provides options for all of other to support as well, either through Opensats or he also advocates donating to devs directly if youâd rather. If anyone doesnât like him, donât support through OS, support another way.
There will always be conflicts of interests but just because youâre friends with someone doesnât mean they arenât doing good things in the space worthy of support.
Iâve been following Odell since the beginning of RHR and Citadel Dispatch,
Learned a ton from him and Marty. Donât know him personally other than that, never met him, but I feel he tries to do the best for Bitcoin. I know Iâm better off (and I expect many others are as well) because of the effort heâs put in over the years. Onward!
I don't really get the hate... In that logic literally everyone is selfish in some way and deserves to be called out for...
Everyone a hater
Itâs virtue signaling and puritan Olympics almost every time.
STOP WASTING ENERGY ON PROVEN BITCOINERS. OUR ACTUAL ENEMIES DESERVE ALL OF THAT ENERGY INSTEAD.
Oh really? So you want to say that hewasnât yelling here in CAPS about saylor and him impacting on Cathie Woods decision with % to opensats and then he is blatantly ignored him to ask in person at bitcoin park? đ What a shitshow. Just again shows how you guys are dependent and have a fear of speaking up because you are all dependent on few entities! Unfortunately!
sounds like you think hes a scammer, for real?
Not often is there a need for a dislike/downvote button, but this is one such case.
From my own experience with OpenSats I disagree with you. nostr:npub1qny3tkh0acurzla8x3zy4nhrjz5zd8l9sy9jys09umwng00manysew95gx !== nostr:npub10pensatlcfwktnvjjw2dtem38n6rvw8g6fv73h84cuacxn4c28eqyfn34f You may call me naive or whatever but without their support I could not build the stuff for other devs with nostr:npub1phpdev2d38u5hzs4jrsh360mevh0rjctu9669quy97wu23u8sqdqpfha0j
Or maybe they talked it out and cleared up the misunderstanding. Was maybe thatâs why Cathie wood ended up donating to them shortly after. But nice job jumping to a baseless conclusion lmao
nostr:npub1qny3tkh0acurzla8x3zy4nhrjz5zd8l9sy9jys09umwng00manysew95gx has done immeasurably more for developers than you have. You should stop being an idiot & hater... and focus on what you are achieving, not what you think & desire to achieve.

I always respected you, but seeing you feign enjoyment from doing plain evil stuff is stupid.
Rockstar, donât try to sell me the idea that millionaires care about developers. Their actions show theyâre more invested in profits than in the people. Some might be fooled, but not me. You guys just should be honest in this space and not using developers as your shield to pitch your proxy investments !

Opensats is a good option for people who need it. But it does mean KYC and the IRS has a honeypot of all the devs.
Which isn't good, but not everyone knows how to bootstrap or run their own business, and infrastructure can't be easily monetized. IMO, grant research money should be reserved for deep research such as frontiers in cryptography, not your next cute level app.
Society in general has a crisis of over specialization and not enough "wears many hats", (individuals with multiple skill sets), a trait that comes with the territory of running self sovereign businesses.
Majority of population is silo'd into 1 track work as employee for corporation mindset. Sad.
thanks for writing this. now iâm thinking more about this idea of a âcrisis of over specializationâ
While investing can bring significant returns, it is important to remember that all investments carry some level of risk. It is essential to thoroughly research and understand the investment opportunity before making any decisions. It is also important to be cautious of potential scams and ensure that the investment is legitimate and safe. Consulting with a financial advisor or coach, like nostr:npub1wj92aqu96a2wmjd47e0w8ptanyxqfh74x9h42x0hmhxegeuy4r9ql3kj56 , can also be helpful in making informed investment decisions.
