Personally I admire the quality and craftsmanship of Smith & Wesson for revolvers. The model 63 has the shorter 3 inch barrel you are looking for, it is well known for reliability, and has adjustable sights. With a modest 8 round capacity.

Honestly though, if you don't mind me saying. Unless you plan on just plinking, or taking care of small pests. 22LR is not a caliber I would be trusting my life with if I would have to defend myself against anything bigger than a rattlesnake.

Sure it can do the job on larger animals and even humans with proper shot placement, but the actual bullet itself I have found never to be something truly reliable. I've experienced my fair share of light primer strikes. So I just consider it to be a fun cheap way to enjoy shooting at the home range. If that is what you are after than by all means. Go for a Smith & Weson Model 63 in 22lr.

However, if you want to have something with a little more power behind it, but still have very manageable recoil. Go for a 38 special, it is better for every day use. The Smith & Wesson Performance Center Pro Series Model 442 Moon Clip is one that I would recommend. That way you can have faster precision reloading with multiple 5 round moon clips in your pocket, you can take down mid-size predators easier, dispose of criminals, and still have fun with target practice too.
