Today I learned about ‘btrfs balance’, a command that does things I don’t wanna know about yet that I’m supposed to run periodically and that is I/O-intensive.
That reminded me of ‘defrag’ on MS-DOS.
The 🐑 #Shepherd was at #FOSDEM and now it’s on TV! 📺

Check out my talk on the beauty (and dangers!) of #Fibers for concurrent programming and that of Juliana on porting it to #Goblins and starting the plan9ification of #Guix. 🤯
The 🐑 #Shepherd 1.0.2 is out, with yet again fewer 🐛 bugs!
Good news for declarative config fans: finally there’s a #Guix System service to deploy home environments!

Thanks to Richard Sent for implementing it, based on code by nostr:npub1zglpd69ltamxe7nnm6rdfleu8amgg3sn24n8rvdey6avckmeax8qvcrqd7.
My friends, I made a terrific (terrible?) discovery that goes by the name ‘sdlpop’:
https://packages.guix.gnu.org/packages/sdlpop/1.22/
I spent hours on this as a kid and it was great, even though I’m not sure I ever went past level 2 (I didn’t today).
Full support to the NixOS users who oppose sponsorship from the military-industrial complex in the name of the community:
One of the achievements of the workshop: ~15 people showed up at the install party with their laptop and left with a working installation, and ~70 attended the #Guix intro tutorial and following packaging intro, now knowing enough to get started.
We’re talking about people new to Guix, working in a variety of domains, and who’d often not self-identify as developers.
« L'appel à la bienveillance, une forme de violence ? »
Why oh why can’t we have a viable Git library? 😢

“sqlelf: Explore ELF objects through the power of SQL”
https://github.com/fzakaria/sqlelf
SQL lacks the expressive power of GNU Poke for these things, but this looks like an interesting and useful way to inspect ELF files.
We’re finalizing the program of the Workshop on Reproducible Software Environments and all I can tell you is that we’ll have a great lineup and wonderful #HPC and #OpenScience topics.

Registrations opening next week!

me: “Do you know what ‘shell’ means in English?”
kid: “Yes! It’s like in ‘guix shell supertuxkart’!”
🤦
Got spam with subject: “would you consider retiring? I can take care of Free Software Foundation”.
The spammer is taking risks: I could well consider retiring, and, independently of that, the FSF may well need to be taken care of.
