i just got my local version of mempool.space working, pretty damn cool
but are 100 sat/vB fees normal? š
lots of fkn transactions? š¤Ø
what does this mean? is it possible to whirlpool on ios now? š¤Ø

ahahha that sounds like it was allegedly quite a shit experience
weird that theyād just flat out stop supporting 12 word seed phrases without having some amount of backwards compatibility, or some sort of conversion of some sort? š¤Ø
i donāt have any direct xmr experience yet - but, they did mention on the podcast that the hard-forks (and such) are good for keeping up with the latest privacy developments, but they do come with a trade-off of backwards comparability (amongst other things)
felt like that during the podcast they were tending towards advocating for keeping smaller amounts in xmr, like a hot-wallet for spending, but they mentioned that some people in xmr community would disagree with that and treat it just like bitcoin as a long-term store of wealth
youāve got an interesting anecdote non-the-less tho
i just listened to a pretty great podcast that talked about xmr
it wasnāt trying to shill anything, it was just talking from a very high-level about its origin, history, how it works, how it differs from btc, etc.
i learned a lot, and the main takeaway for me seemed to be that, until lightning network is private by default, then your ābest optionā in terms of privacy is probably spend using xmr
doesnāt mean you canāt achieve the same privacy on bitcoin, but i think itās just a matter of effort and room for error - xmr seems to give you a pretty good level of privacy with relatively low effort, and less room for error
the tl;dr seemed to be: save in bitcoin, but spend in xmr (for now)
thoughts?
(iām not trying to shill anything here, just sharing what i learned and keen to hear opinions)
can someone explain to me the money that FDIC / any gov agency gave to JP for their acquisition of first republic?
like they got a loan from the FDIC, right? but how are they āsharing the losses with FDICā (which is what i heard)?
and how THE FUCK do you acquire a dying bank and then expect to profit? confidence game?
certainly does, i probably shouldāve dedicated a bit more ram to the build process in the config, but too late now
it must output itās % progress by number of blocks, because if got to 40-50% real quick, but now has taken like an entire day to get to 65% š¤£
raspberry pi 4 isnāt that powerful tho, so makes sense
yeah my gf and were in our last rental for two years, but when our lease came up, the owners sold, and we got stuck in the tightest fucking rental market ever
iām keen on buying, just trying to find something in the right area, right price, right size, etc.
iād rather a shit place that needs some love thatās in a good location
gotta go see a broker and all that shit tho - any practical advice for the actual process of buying a house? (if you have any experience that is)
yeah, iāve had a stable relationship for nearly four years now, and we need our own place to make the next steps in our life i reckon
iāve been using this tool called mortgage.monster where you can put in a view of rates expectations and property value (it doesnāt let you put inflation expectations in though)
but even under extremely shit conditions (persistent 5% rates that fall to 3% in 5 years, and a 25% drop in property market followed by sub-1% growth for 30 years) it still seems like youād build your equity up with time
inflation can obviously make a massive impact over that sort of time period, but thereās not much you can do about that
feels like in almost all cases iām probably better off just biting the bullet, buying, building equity - didnāt used to be the case when renting was cheaper, but certainly feels like buying sets you better off now (especially if you want to build a family which i do)
rent for $500 p/week, or borrow $500k at 6% and pay $580ish p/week in repayments?
whatās the best lightning network setup to use for my rpi node? i know i want to use core-lightning, and zeus wallet - but should i use rtl? thunderhub? something else? anything else?
waiting for my fulcrum db to build šµāš«
Interesting.
So, it it actually impossible to know how much xmr is circulating all around the place? Is it impossible to know how much value is being settled on the xmr network?
From the Bitcoin perspective I think itās pretty cool that you can sort of view how much value was moved in each block (i.e. like āvalue settledā on the bitcoin blockchain).
I wonder how much ādaily valueā is being transferred across / settled on the xmr blockchain (relative to the bitcoin blockchain) 𤨠is that even possible to determine due to the xmr privacy enhancements?
genuine question - what are the large differences between xmr and bitcoin?
does it boil down to xmr has much better privacy tech (by virtue of it being almost its entire focus), compared to bitcoin where you have to jump through some hoops to gain privacy (so itās more-so an issue of effort)?
or, is there truly some amazing privacy protections in xmr that just will never be possible in bitcoin (without a hard fork), and thereās no real soft fork alternative functionality?
not trying to start a war here š just trying to better understand the genuine trade offs people are making
iāve never wanted to sign up to anything, so iāve just been using phind(dot)com
essentially it acts as a better, more tailored search engine for me, pretty much assisted in helping me setup my rpi4 bitcoin core node āthe hard wayā (i.e. completely over SSH using Ubuntu Core)
iāve been getting it to explain to me what all the different parameters in the bitcoin.conf that people tell you to set in their guides, are actually doing
but when something doesnāt make clear / direct sense iām almost always googling it to confirm (i.e. doing a bit of my own research to double check)
for me, itās just a waaaaay better search engine essentially
what are the most essential things i should be putting into my ābitcoin.confā file?
yo, iām officially running bitcoin core
> bitcoin-cli getblockchaininfo
yields me the latest block; amazing!
whatās olympus?
this morning is the morning i begin downloading the bitcoin blockchain onto my rpi4 ubuntu server node šš¼
iāve been trying to learn as much as i can in the bitcoin space too though - iāve been setting up a node on a raspberry pi āthe hard wayā(i.e. SSH only, all from the command line using Ubuntu Server)
hereās something i wrote (mostly for my own benefit) about setting up your rpi4 node to boot from your SSD (instead of sd card) when youāre using Ubuntu Server (which isnāt as easy as it seems if you donāt have a USB-to-SATA cable handy):
