Same director who did Deer Hunter. After its success the studios gave him carte blanche.
Apparently it took so long to shoot that John Hurt went off and did The Elephant Man, with David Lynch (rip), and then came back to set. The film effectively ruined the directors career, I think in part because of the critics.
Heavens Gate - massive flop in the 80's, I enjoyed it.

Nobody produces art. Things are created, or destroyed, by people using tools. The viewer of the thing gets to decide if it is art, or not.
Also, most people that have been generally accepted as good artists typically have no regard for anyone but themselves.
