It was a propaganda coup. It was very successful in manipulating the minds of ordinary folk.
American Men hate themselves for their natural sexual desires. It's awful. We used to do it to homos. Now we do it to any man who sees any attractive woman who might be under 21.

Sex has lots of very positive consequences.
We have a system that doesn't actually prepare children for real life, but one that artificially extends their childhood in order to avoid all possible "harm".

When I was 17 my boyfriend was 23. It was totally fine.
In some US states someone could go to prison for that "crime" which hurt absolutely no one.
It's Puritan hysteria creating a huge problem where none existed before.
Actual child marriage is really quite rare. Sometimes media outlets skew the figures to get shock value for their headline. Like they count 16 and 17 year olds as children and they account for like 98% of all the "child" brides.
The "science" they used to "prove" that your brain is undeveloped until you're 25 is garbage.

The Hysteria teaches that young adults have no brain power
and can be easily brainwashed by anyone older than them.
There's not a shred of evidence to support that nonsense,
but people choose to believe it.

I have lived in countries where the age of consent is 15.
It's really not a problem. Only the Americans are having a hysterical freakout, because they are terrified of sex.
Laws should be evidence based.
In Portugal the age of consent is 14.
Is there any evidence that that law harms Portuguese youth?
If so, show it.
If not, then maybe Americans incarcerating each other for harmless activities is just Puritan hysteria doing major damage w no benefit.
Threatening to put someone's boyfriend in prison doesn't help young people.
In fact it is strong incentive to keep a relationship secret, which means that parents lose all ability to help.
Prohibition is a very bad idea.

peeps are somehow sure that it is obvious that this relationship must cause harm.

So where is the evidence of that?
People are confused about what the age of consent is.
The age of consent is NOT the age at which society thinks *you should be having sex*.
The age of consent is the moment when the state stops deciding for you and you become responsible for making those decisions for yourself.
