Today in 1972, the 1st tickets for the Summit Series Game at the Montreal Forum went on sale. A total of 12,000 tickets were issued at $7 each.

Over 7,000 tickets went to Hockey Canada officials, politicians and dignitaries.

Today in 2021, Tony Esposito died.

Born in 1943, he is the brother of Phil Esposito. In his NHL career from 1967 to 1984, he won one Stanley Cup with Montreal in 1969. He spent most of his career with Chicago, winning the Calder and three Vezinas.

Today in 1953, the Liberals under Louis St. Laurent won 169 seats in the federal election.

George Drew and the Progressive Conservatives won 51 seats.

This was the last election win for the Liberals until 1963.

Today in 1902, Edith Shearer was born in Montreal. In her film career from 1919 to 1942, she became the first five-time Academy Award acting nominee.

She won the award once, in 1930, for her role in The Divorcee.

She passed away on June 12, 1983.

Robbie Robertson has died.

He was the lead guitarist and songwriter for the iconic group The Band.

Born in Toronto on July 5, 1943, he is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Canada's Walk of Fame and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

RIP to a Rock Legend.

Happy birthday to Dan Levy, born today in 1983 in Toronto!

He began his career as a TV host on MTV Canada, before co-creating his critically-acclaimed show Schitt's Creek with his father Eugene.

He has won 4 Emmys, a Golden Globe and seven Canadian Screen Awards.

Today in 1945, Robert Hampton Gray died.

Born in Trail, B.C. in 1917, he earned the Victoria Cross for his actions on the day he died when he sank the Amakusa before his plane crashed into the water.

His memorial is the only known one for an Allied serviceman on Japanese soil.

A man walks around with a sign advertising acid for $2 and a gram of hash for $7 at the Strawberry Fields Festival north of Toronto on Aug. 9, 1970.

A total of 55,000 people came out for the rock festival.

Today in 1918, the Canada's Hundred Days campaign began. The campaign lasted until the end of WW1.

In the campaign, the Germans were pushed back into Belgium, leading to their surrender.

Canada suffered 45,835 casualties during the 100 Days as they fought 47 German Divisions

Happy birthday to Shawn Mendes, born today in Pickering, ON in 1998!

He is one of only five artists to debut an album at number one before the age of 18.

In his career so far, he has won 13 SOCAN Awards, eight Junos, sold 20 million albums & received three Grammy nominations

Spending much of her adult life as an activist, she was instrumental in removing gender discrimination from the Indian Act.

She then became the first Indigenous woman to sit in the Senate.

Happy birthday to Sidney Crosby, born today in 1987 in Halifax!

So far in his career that began in 2005, he has won two Art Ross, two Harts, three Ted Lindsay, two Rocket Richards, two Conn Smythe, three Stanley Cups and two Mark Messier Leadership Awards.

Several signs are displayed at Crystal (Bay) Beach near Fort Erie, banning everything from strolling around after dark to walking dogs on Aug. 7, 1969.

Even with all the signs, locals complained that heavy drinking and street fighting were still a problem.

Today in 1877, Tom Thomson was born in Claremont, Ontario.

In his too-short career, he produced about 400 oil sketches on wood panels & 50 larger works on canvas.

He died suddenly while canoeing in Algonquin Park in 1917.

He remains an iconic Canadian artist.

In her career, she has released 12 albums, received a Grammy nomination and won three Juno Awards.

A member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame & Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, she has sold 4.2 million albums.

Today in 2013, Willie Dunn died in Ottawa.

Born in 1941, he released several albums, with his most famous song being The Ballad of Crowfoot. He turned the song into an NFB film in 1968, becoming the first NFB film directed by an Indigenous filmmaker.

Today in 1940, Montreal Mayor Camillien Houde was arrested on charges of sedition for urging Quebec men to ignore any calls for conscription.

He remained in an internment camp until 1944. When he returned to Montreal, 50,000 people greeted him.
