Called the Maharaja of the Keyboard by Duke Ellington, he released more than 200 recordings during his career of more than 60 years.

He also won eight Grammys and is considered one of the best jazz pianists of the 20th century

Today in 1896, Catherine de Hueck Doherty was born in Russia.

She came to Canada in 1947 & became a pioneer in the struggle for interracial justice.

In her life, she wrote over 30 books & she is currently under consideration for canonization by the Catholic Church.

Today in 1917, the Battle of Hill 70 began.

The battle lasted until Aug. 25, 1917, and was an important Canadian victory.

In the overall battle, fought under Sir Arthur Currie, 9,000 Canadians were killed or wounded.

A total of six Canadians received the Victoria Cross in this battle.

Today in 2003, a massive power outage hit Ontario & parts of the Northeastern & Midwestern United States. The power remained out for seven hours. About 55 million people lost power.

The outage was caused by a software bug in a control room alarm system in Ohio.

Today in 1906, Chief Joe Capilano leads several chiefs in their 15-minute audience with King Edward VII. He presented a petition to resolve matters related to land claims in Saskatchewan and to remove the ban on potlatches.

Today in 1934, John Labatt is kidnapped by four men while he drives from his holiday home along Lake Huron back into Toronto.

His kidnapping would become a media circus.

Today in 1941, the Government of Canada approved the creation of the Canadian Women's Army Corps. Several thousand women enlist.

On March 13, 1942, the army integrates the Canadian Women's Army Corps, allowing women to adopt military ranks.

Most of the focus of the camp was on scoring goals, and less on defence.
