Today in 1912, Thomas Wilby and Jack Haney left Halifax on the first cross-country drive of Canada.
The drive to the Pacific Coast took over 50 days, over tough terrain and poor trails.
Also, the two men hated each other.

Jean Chretien prepares hot dogs with Jim Peterson, who was seeking re-election in Willowdale on Aug. 27, 1984.
They are wearing aprons that say "We Roast Tories!"
Peterson lost but returned to Parliament in 1988, serving until 2007.

Today in 1957, Rick Hansen was born.
On June 27, 1973, he was paralyzed in a car accident.
Inspired by his friend Terry Fox, he embarked on the Man in Motion tour from 1985-1987, raising $26 million for spinal cord research.

Today in 1980, Terry Fox met 10-year-old Greg Scott during his Marathon of Hope. They bonded over their shared cancer experience, ran together and swam in a lake near Terrace Bay, Ontario.

Today in 1951, Bill Barilko and his dentist Henry Hudson left in a small plane for a fishing trip in Northern Ontario.
Both men died on that trip, and it was not until 1962 that their bodies were found.

Today in 1949, Leon Redbone was born.
Over the course of his career, he released 18 albums and sang the theme to the TV show Mr. Belvedere.
Well-known for his love of the Tin Pan Alley musical era, he was twice a musical guest on SNL in its first season.
He died in 2019.

Today in 1875, John Buchan was born in England.
Famous for his novels, and helping to create the spy thriller genre, he became Canada's Governor General in 1935.
He served until 1940 when he died in office due to a stroke & fall.

Eric Fryer takes his chair on his first day on set portraying Terry Fox in The Terry Fox Story on Aug. 26, 1982.
The film won five Genie Awards, including Best Picture & Best Actor for Fryer.
It was the first television movie made for a cable network.

Today in 1921, Monty Hall was born in Winnipeg.
He began his career in Canadian radio & then moved to CBC Television.
From 1963 to 1976, he was the host of Let's Make A Deal.
In his lifetime, through telethons and other efforts, he raised $1 billion for charity.

A whole lot of Hall of Famers in this picture, including Boom Boom Geoffrion, Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito and Mr. Hockey himself, Gordie Howe.
They were all on hand to see Howe and Geoffrion inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Aug. 24, 1972.

He is well-known for his roles as Pierre Trudeau & Glenn Gould, as Detective Martin Ward in Bon Cop, Bad Cop & as Sir Reginald Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy.
He has won a Gemini & a Canadian Screen Award.

Today in 1991, Colleen Dewhurst died.
Born in Montreal in 1924, she won two Tony Awards and four Emmys during her career.
She also won two Geminis for her portrayal of Marilla Cuthbert in the Anne of Green Gables TV movies.
She played the role in Road to Avonlea as well.

Happy birthday to Carrie-Anne Moss, born today in 1967 in Burnaby, B.C!
Rising to fame as Trinity in The Matrix, she has also appeared in films such as Chocolat and Memento, & shows such as Due South, Forever Knight & Daredevil.
In 2006, she won a Genie Award for Snow Cake.

Today in 1853, the Breadalbane becomes trapped in the ice and is crushed.
She sinks near Beechey Island & the crew of 21 are saved by the sister ship, the HMS Phoenix.
In 1980, the ship is found intact. She is well-preserved due to the cold Arctic waters.
